British women are being held in a European camp.

A chapter in the book British Women

New Enemies

by Tomes Johnston

Characters:
Samantha James-- A British prisoner in a European Camp.
Amanda James - Samantha's mother.
Colonel Bruno Koch -- the camp commandant.
Lieutenant Jens Van Damme -- one of the camp officers.
Jane King -- Another British woman.

There is also a chorus of four men and four women who can interact with the actors for emphasis.
A stringed instrument plays and as the lights come up we can see the chorus dressed in robes. The men stand opposite the women.
There is a mirror and make-up kit on a dresser downstage. A man in his thirties enters wearing trousers and a vest. He crosses to the dresser and starts to apply make-up. He powders his face till it is white. He starts to look like a marionette. When he is finished he rises and dons a military jacket. He turns and addresses the audience.

Jens:
I'm Jens Van Damme. I was a Lieutenant in the European Army.

THE LIGHT COMES UP ON SAMANTHA AND AMANDA JAMES. THEIR FACES ARE PAINTED LIKE JENS' FACE.

Jens Cont:
These women are British, mother and daughter, Amanda and Samantha. We are in what they call...

Jens and male chorus:
The United Kingdom...

Jens:
And what we call...

Jens and male chorus:
The European Union.

Jens:
All wars begin as a battle of words.

Jens and male chorus:
And this is war.

Jens:
They are held here and suffer physically and emotionally because of useless ideals and patriotism. The nation state is a thing of the past.

JENS WALKS TOWARDS THE CHORUS. THE WOMEN RUB THEMSELVES IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP WARM.

Samantha:
What will they do with us?

Amanda:
They won't do a thing.

Samantha:
How do you know that, Mother?

Samantha and female chorus:
You know what evil men do to captive women.

Amanda:
Be quiet. Don't get hysterical.

JANE KING, ANOTHER BRITISH WOMAN WHO IS OLDER THAN SAMANTHA ENTERS WITH A LARGE BAG. HER FACE IS ALSO PAINTED WHITE. SHE WALKS OVER TO THE OTHER TWO WOMEN.

Jane:
God save the queen.

Amanda:
God save the queen.

Jane:
I'm Jane King.

SHE OFFERS THEM FOOD FROM HER BAG.

Jane Cont:
Take it then. You need to eat and keep up your strength.

Amanda:
TAKING SOME FOOD.
Thank you.

Jane:
I counted hundreds of prisoners. They are cooped up in cages like battery hens, and you...

Samantha:
Me? What?

Jane:
You better put some mud on your face and mess your hair up a bit.

Samantha:
Why?

Jane:
You need to make yourself look less attractive.
