The Land of Dreams

by Just2Write

I fell into the land of dreams.
Now, some may come this way by chance
and some will enter through romance.
Some find their way with opiates
lost in the daze their dreams dictate.
Some drive here crazy in their grief,
and pray their dreams will bring relief.

But me, I fell, without a net;
a free-fall done without regret.
I closed my eyes against the night
where nothing is just what it seems.

Oh, how I dreamed and often schemed
to make my plans and hide away
so safe within myself - it seemes
When I fell into the land of dreams.

The lies I told to starlit skies
as I flew high on crumpled wings
where all life was what life was not.
Was it life's solace that I sought
as answer to so many things?

I closed my eyes and dream I did -
Shut out the world, and then I hid.
The earth hid too, in deep disguise
beyond the lashes of my eyes.

And all around to my surprise
with moon and madness on the rise
I was the master of my fate;
or so I thought at any rate.

Illusions from the land of dreams.

The psychedelic swirl of cloud
was multi-coloured, bright and loud
and in this dream-world I would stay
and dreamed my real world go away.

Then one cold day, I learned the truth
as I ran slipping from my youth
and in my dotage came to know
that I was dreaming, and must go -
for nothing is just what it seems
when living in the land of dreams.
Though dreams are good, make no mistake
you cannot live, ‘til you’re awake.

Vers Libre - 19th-century poetic innovation that liberated French poetry from its traditional prosodic rules. In vers libre, the basic metrical unit is the phrase rather than a line of a fixed number of syllables, as was traditional in French versification since the Middle Ages. In vers libre, the lengths of lines may vary according to the sense of the poem, the complete sentence replaces the stanza as a unit of meaning, and rhyme is optional.
