Held Captive

Thirteen-year-old girl didn't arrive home yet;
last seen at a small corner-store after school,
her home close to school-yard she had just left.

Freezing temperatures, a defining tool.
Could she be at a friend's, dilly-dallying home?
Police seek hours, investigation rule.

Weeks passed, foul play now evident, outruled roamed.
No clues to disappearance of missing girl.
Days turned into weeks, yet many months they combed,

the area where vanished this lovely pearl.
Then one day they sought a vacant, unused shed,
Candice Doerksen lay there rock solid and curled,

her screams unheard, hands tied behind her back; red.
Thirty years have passed since that gruesome search led.

Based on a true story, Candice was found in an old warehouse six-weeks later following her missing status. She was gagged, hands tied behind her back,
and was left to freeze to death without food, heat of any kind, and only a dark shelter from the snow. The murder is still under investigation, although one man has been imprisoned and says he didn't do it. His hair was found on her clothing. This tragedy broke my heart since I had girls her age, and especially as it comes up, even now.
