Pantoum Sonnet

Our Precious Prize

by w.j.debi

Our fairy hearts are filled with frantic glee.
The conquest went so very well tonight.
We have our changeling child; just come and see.
Its cherub face and rounded ears, delight.

The conquest went so very well tonight.
We sneaked right in and snatched our chosen prize.
Its cherub face and rounded ears, delight.
So come and hear its precious coos and sighs.

We sneaked right in and snatched our chosen prize,
And left enchanted fetch to take its place.
So come and hear its precious coos and sighs,
And leave sweet fairy kisses on its face.

Our fairy hearts are filled with frantic glee.
We have our changeling child; just come and see.

I didn't plan a sequel, but the fairies insisted.

A Pantoum Sonnet is a combined form
Like the sonnet it is 14 lines of iambic pentameter with three quatrains and a couplet.
Like a pantoum it has repeated lines
The 2nd and 4th line of the first stanza become the 1st and 3rd lines of the second stanza. The 2nd and 4th lines of the second stanza become the 1st and 3rd lines of the third stanza. The lines of the closing couplet are the same as the 1st and 3rd lines of the beginning stanza.

Fetch = enchanted sticks or wood that is left in place of a human child. The "fetch" looks likes just like the human child that has been taken by the fairies, but slowly sickens and dies.

Changeling = a troll, elf, fairy or enchanted piece of wood (fetch) left by the fairies in exchange for a human child. The term also is used to refer to the human child that has been taken.
