Motherhood-Shoes: Gratitude Delayed

by words

my childhood self
found you wanting
in most
mothering skills
thought your motherhood-shoes
ill-fitting and
run down at the heels

viewed you
with the hot eyes
of need and
always
found you lacking

how angry
and intransigent
I must have
seemed to be

a full blown
motherhood critic
at the ripe old age
of three

today
having walked
a lifetime
in my own
mile-weary
fire-singed
tear-tanned

mommy-shoes

having stumbled
limped and
failed
a time or ten
or twenty
seen disappointment
film
my children's eyes

I want to say
I'm sorry
for my callow
childish ire
and shower your
memory
with gratitude
for the stunning
care
you gave

leading me step
by constant
step
to adulthood's
refining
shoals
