Free-verse Sketch

Thank You For Your Service

by words

so young
dew still clings
to cheeks

adulthood
like a borrowed
suit
too long in the
sleeves

filled to the brim
with dreams
our young
don uniforms

then step into
battle's
hell

bond tightly
to those on either
side
willing to die
for a friend

finally
aged beyond years

they return

wounded
shattered
adrift
in comfortless
reality

but
at last ...

home

let their homecoming
be a loving one

ask about their war
their struggles
their lives

thank them
for their service

Machiavellian power brokers
chose
the targets

our young
in star-spangled innocence
bled

so I say to them
one American
to another

thank you for your service
