Shifting Shadows

Shifting Shadows

~§~

What's that lurking 'neath my door,

things just aren't like they were before,

my imagination, or something more;

—now clawing to get in?

The terrifying sounds they're making,

upon the wooden door, they're raking,

sanity, I'm soon forsaking,

—from fearing where they've been.

What do these shadows want from me,

why can't they simply let me be?

I entertain the thought to flee;

—to quell the haunting din.

In my mind, that's where they're lurking,

body quivers, head starts jerking,

all the while the shadows... smirking,

—just waiting to begin

Slowly, the door is opened wide,

dark shadows shifting by my side,

nowhere to run— no place to hide;

—I fear the leering grin.

Its time to go, they say to me,

realizing now —they've set me free;

my thoughts return with clarity,

—to memories of my sin.

And, as I don my coat of white,

the door is locked up nice and tight,

as screams of madness pierce the night

—inside the looney bin...
