Empty

by michaelcahill

EMPTY

My heart bereft, soul's final flight has flown.
Forever wasn't quite, it seems, that long
Its trembling known, your sweetest favors shown,
I sadly sing of love, our former song.

Yes, gold does glitter, beckoning new dreams
I only offered me 'til time wound down.
Our embers drenched by titillating schemes
forbidden seems preferred as our vows drown;

But now I stand before you, gun in hand.
I wait for him to reach beneath the bed.
I hear the trigger cock-- I leap and land
a bloody mess atop you both; I'm dead.

My gun a toy--a ploy-- to make my play.
You'll bear my stain until your dying day.
