Warren and Harry make an appointment.

A chapter in the book Depleted Uranium

Appointment Time.

by Tomes Johnston

Background
Harry Laing is a veteran of Iraq who is dying of cancer. His brother, Warren, is a university lecturer, and is trying to get to the truth. They learn about Harry's cancer, and talk about the treatment
DEBBIE
He loves you so much, Warren.

HARRY
She can talk, can't she, Warren?

DEBBIE
Harry, I thought you were sleeping.

HARRY
I can't sleep.

DEBBIE
You need to rest.

WARREN
Come and join us, Bro.

HARRY
You are a kind host.

WARREN
Thank you, kind sir.
(HARRY PULLS OUT SOME CIGARETTES.)

HARRY
So, what's the latest on me, then?

DEBBIE
Don't be like that, darling.

WARREN
We were talking about you all right.

HARRY
Me and my cancer, right?
(WARREN TAKES THE CIGARETTES AWAY FROM HIM.)
Are you going to give me another lecture?

WARREN
It's only for your own good, Bro. Your situation...

HARRY
This is my problem. The damage is already done. Has Louise left? Can I get something to eat at least?

WARREN
(DEBBIE GOES TO THE FRIDGE.)
You should ease up on her.

HARRY
Who, Debs?

WARREN
Yeah, she's having a hard time as well.

HARRY
(DEBBIE RETURNS.)
Is there anything to drink?

DEBBIE
Yes, Your Highness.

HARRY
That's my girl.
(DEBBIE GOES TO GET A DRINK.)

WARREN
Come on, Harry, lighten up, will you? You're treating her like a slave.

HARRY
It'll all be over for her soon enough.

WARREN
The doctors could be wrong.

HARRY
(AS DEBBIE RETURNS.)
Thanks, Debs. You're too good. I don't deserve you.
(SHE KISSES HIM.)
Do you want to join me for golf tomorrow?

WARREN
Yes, absolutely.

HARRY
Have you got your clubs?

WARREN
I do, but I haven't played in ages, so I'll be a bit rusty.

HARRY
That sounds good to me. (PAUSE.) Warren, you're family, so you have a right to know. I've told Debs to get rid of this place when I'm gone, and move somewhere suitable to her. This place is too big for her anyway, and the mortgage is too much for her to pay. Hopefully, the insurance will take care of it, but we need to be on the safe side.

WARREN
Do what you have to.

HARRY
We will; don't worry about that. (PAUSE.) One of those uncomfortable silences, eh!

WARREN
Oh, I'm just tired. I must go to bed.

HARRY
Yes, get some sleep. You'll need it for tomorrow. I better go as well.

(HARRY LEAVES AND GOES TO BED.)
