An old couple who have had a long hard life together.
by victor 66
An old man bent over a hoe
Moves cautiously over a
Time has not been kind to
Him, but then he never
Had much respect for time.
The old man's back creaks
As he straightens up slowly.
He looks toward the decaying
House and sees an old woman
On the porch, cleaning potatoes
And ground cherries.
The old man squints and stays
Because he's helpless, chained
By his weaknesses.
The old woman squints back and
Stays because she's responsible,
Chained by her strengths.
The old man bloats like a fish,
Staring at the old woman with rage.
The old woman pays no attention,
As she shakes out her apron.
She remembers the time when she
Threatened to kill him in his sleep.
