Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
True story of a day with my child in South Australia

Through the Fence

by His Grayness

Through the Fence

It was my morning
To take him to Child Care
We took a quick detour
To the Airport
Quite spontaneously
Just for a new experience

We looked hopefully
Through the Fence
With barbed wire tops
Beside impatient old men
Waiting to see one
Land or take off
Nothing happened

But he climbed
Over the seats
In and out
Of my sunroof

And smiled continuously
His perfect smile
He was just happy
To be with me

For awhile we hoped
About a premature 747
We watched impatiently
Through the fence
But it never moved

We talked about far away
Places and long flights
He wanted to go now

I thought of the Helicopters
Bright and exciting
Buckled him in
And went quickly
In hopes of
A whooping display

We saw them
Through the Fence
We waited
We dreamed
Nothing happened

But he climbed
Over the seats
In and out
Of my sunroof

And smiled continuously
His perfect smile
He was just happy
To be with me

We were very late
It was time
To take him to
Day Care

I got him there
Just in time
We rushed
Through the fence
Gate into the school

He grabbed a wooden puzzle
And pulled me down
To help on Tiny Chairs

I put a floppy sun hat
On his beautiful little head
Knowing the sand pit
And children waited

Through the fence
Outside in the hot
South Australian Sun
I wanted him safe

We finished the puzzle
He quickly turned it over
To give us a fresh mission
Just to keep the time

The teacher came
With a bright greeting
He smiled up from under
The silly hat
Glowing endless joy
Grabbed me around the neck
With a bear hug
And said to the teacher

"I got my Dad "

My heart nearly burst
With love and gratitude
He went with her to the gate
To wave good-bye
I kissed him
Through the Fence

Got into my lonely Mercedes
Closed the sunroof
Drove away towards my office
Pulled over....And cried !!!

God I hate Fences!!!
