BREATHE--A Prescription...

by Joan E.

BREATHE--A Prescription for Stress Reduction

Begin in a private--quiet plus comfortable place
Relax--focusing on inhaling deeply at a seven-second pace
Exhale fully between lips--repeating cycle slowly seven times
Associate all actions with healthy heart rhythms and enzymes
Triumphantly sending nourishment throughout your body like chimes
Heal and treat yourself to calmness in these fifteen minutes of imagery
Enjoy each relaxation session daily with a new sense of energy

This is self-talk, since I've had a bad cold for two weeks. Dr. John M. Kennedy, director of preventive cardiology and wellness at Marina del Rey Hospital, California, and his colleagues developed the approach they call "BREATHE," which is a natural way to reduce stress and help heal the heart in just 15 minutes a day. The acronym actually stands for "Begin, Relax, Envision, Apply, Treat, Heal, End" and I hope my poetic liberties communicate the simple, yet effective technique.

The words in crystal clear's artwork are: "The air we breathe... The peace we seek..."
