September's Reward

by Joan E.

month of song to remember
our savory September
bound by school books dispensing
subtle lessons commencing

our savory September
unlike chilly November
subtle lessons commencing
add Autumn's recompensing

unlike chilly November
her sultry shades of amber
add Autumn's recompensing
Summer's colors condensing

her sultry shades of amber
announce leafless December
Summer's colors condensing
become Fall's splendid fencing

In a pantoum, lines 2 and 4 become lines 1 and 3 in the subsequent stanza(s). "September Song" is an American pop standard composed by Kurt Weill, with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson, introduced by Walter Huston in the 1938 Broadway musical "Knickerbocker Holiday." It since has been recorded by numerous singers from Bing Crosby to Peter, Paul and Mary.
