With each inhale,
on the cusp of bursting lungs,
I breathe you in,
the scent of promises whispered
beneath my skin.

With each exhale,
relief washes over me—
grateful release.

A silent prayer carried
on the back of breath
departing from my lungs;

I pray for lightness,
lightness to bear my limbs
to the top of every inhale.

Two birds entwined,
soaring higher with each breath,
then floating downward
on its release.

I pause for a moment
and repeat.
