Vying in Iambic Tetrameter

Poetry Contests Contest Winner
Contests come and contests go
And some are great but some just blow
And some are dumb and others clever
While some have rules that run forever

Now, five bucks for an entry fee
That seems a fair amount to me
But ten bucks as the going rate
Will make me hyperventilate

The short forms seem to get more play
And sonnets scare the noobs away
But something that to me seems funny?
Free verse contests still cost money

The winning's nice, there's no denyin'
You tell me otherwise, you're lyin'
'Cause losers learn humility
But winning fills the treasury

The poems I'm loath to share with you
Will earn the highest revenue
And poems I'm sure will make me rich
Will often bomb (ain't that a bitch?)

There's one more thing I must confess
I love to play with words, I guess
I'll gladly share my art with you
And hope you'll cast a vote or two

Although, it's not that chance for fame
That draws me like a moth to flame
It's entering these comps, you see
That helps improve my poetry

Joining FanStory sparked my interest in poetry. Learning from others on here lit the fire. Entering contests fans the flames...

Thanks for reading my tongue-in-cheekish poem!
