My fear of the coal shed

The Bogeyman

by Sandra Stoner-Mitchell

I lifted the latch with a long piece of wood...
and jumped back...
The door creaked open-just slightly...
not more than a crack...

I took a deep breath
and counted to ten
then poked with the wood
and tried once again
to open the door
and open it wide
cause I wanted to see
without going inside ...

Was HE there?

The coal shed was empty, except for the coal...
and the dust...
So I picked up the scuttle as Mother had told me...
I must...

Yet, to fill it with coal
meant going inside
but there in the dark
could the Bogeyman hide?
Waiting to grab me
and not let me go
then take me away
so no one would know...

He WAS there.

I tried to be brave and started to sing...
very loud...
Then took one step forward and thought how my Mum...
would be proud...

Then I saw something move
and my bravery went
straight out the door
where in panic, I sent,
the coal-scuttle flying
with a clattering sound
as it bounced off the door
and onto the ground...

WAS he there?

My Mother came running and so did my Dad...
to my side...
I felt such a fool when they laughed that I broke down...
and cried...

When they opened the door
out sprang the cat
pleased with himself
for catching the rat
that had run in the coal shed
trying to hide
and that's what I'd seen
when I'd peeped inside...

THEY were there!

I posted this one when I first joined FS, it had no picture and wasn't presented right, soooo, you lucky people, I am posting it again!!
As a child, my Uncle George used to threaten to throw me in the coal shed when I sang 'Georgy porgy puddin' and pie'. He knew I was afraid of dark places. I knew he was teasing, but I was still frightened he would do it.
