Working in the Garden

by sweetwoodjax

A woman sat in her garden alone, wishing someone would stop by to see her. Everyone seemed to have a friend to sit and talk with. Then, she heard Jesus speak, "Today I am going to visit with you. We'll sit in your garden."

The woman looked around and saw that her garden was in disarray. She immediately set forth to clear out all the weeds. She was pulling up withered flowers when she heard a voice behind her.

"Lady, I am so thirsty. Could you share a bit of water with me?"

"Can you not see that I am busy? I have a visitor coming later and I have to get my garden ready before He gets here. I don't have time to deal with you."

Another hour went by with the woman working hard to get ready. Her garden had to be perfect for Jesus to see. She was pulling up flowers that had not rooted when she heard another voice behind her.

"Lady, I am so hungry. Will you share with me a piece of bread?"

Exasperated, the woman snapped, "I don't have time to be fooling with everybody wanting to bother me today. I have things to do. I have to get my garden ready."

Another hour went by and the garden was almost through. She still needed to finish up. Again, she heard a voice behind her.

"Lady, I am so tired. May I have a seat in your garden for a few minutes?"

The woman was exceedingly angry. "I have been wanting people to visit me for years. Now that I have a visitor coming to see me, I have people bothering me. Leave me alone and let me prepare for my visitor!"

When her garden was clear, the woman looked and saw her clothing was in such disarray. She was getting ready to go inside her house when she heard another voice behind her.

"Lady, can you spare a shirt for me? I tore mine and I am so cold."

The woman said, "I don't have time to be fooling with you. I have to get ready for my visitor. Leave me alone!"

When the woman was dressed in her new clothes in her freshly weeded garden, she sat and waited for Jesus. The sun was preparing to hide behind the cover of night when she cried out, "Jesus, I thought you were coming to visit me."

Jesus said, "I was naked and you didn't clothe me, I was thirsty and you did not give me drink. I was hungry and you did not feed me. I was tired and you didn't give me rest."

The woman held her head in shame as she reflected on the times she had turned Jesus away.

Sometimes we overlook the chances we have a chance to help. Beware when dealing with strangers, for you may be entertaining angels unaware. I wrote this story based on the words of Christ in Matthew 25
