The Piano

by fionageorge

This is a story about a young couple
Ordinary in so many ways
They fell in love, courted and wed
In those difficult war-torn days

They shared a love of Jesus
And a belief in the afterlife
Both were young and innocent
Content to be husband and wife

Along came a beautiful baby girl
A year later they had another one
Then only eighteen months after that
They were blessed with their first son

Money was hard to come by
They were poor as poor could be
He worked hard, took a second job
To provide for his family

They did have an old piano
She'd had since she was young
Each night she played her music
And their favourite songs they sung

They struggled to put food on the table
Due to war food was in short supply
They'd go without for their children
Couldn't bear to hear them cry

To forget about their own hunger
She played his favourite song
Though their bodies grew weak and weary
Their love remained deep and strong

One night when she had gone to bed
He softly closed the door
The next morning when she awoke
The piano was there no more

He looked at her with sorrow
His eyes bleary; he hadn't slept
A large bag of potatoes stood
Where once the piano was kept

She fell into his open arms
Thought her heart would surely break
He gently kissed her forehead and said
It's a sacrifice we had to make

The war has robbed us of many things
But we've always had each other
Our children truly are blessed, my dear
To still have a father and mother

To date God has kept our family safe
And I hope that's how it will stay
So many others have lost so much more
It's for those that we must pray

Now dance with me, my beautiful wife
We don't need a piano to play
The music we love is within our hearts
No-one can ever take that away

In this contest you are challenged to write a poem that tells a story and also rhymes.

Australian English

This is based on my mother telling us about her beloved piano, and Papa swapping it for a bag of potatoes to feed his family. Not long after, the war ended. We never did have another piano, but we always had a house filled with music, love and laughter. We sang and danced, no matter what the occasion. No-one ever took the music from my parents, it was in their souls, it was part of them, and us. I still love music, and as a family, so many years later, and long after the death of our beautiful mother, we will always sing together.

Thank you so much, lorac1, for the use of your artwork entitled, 'You selected Wright Bros Piano', which is just perfect for this poem.
