A note from a parent to a teacher

The Knock upon the Door

by BothePo8

One day while talking with my class,
I heard a knocking on the door.
Since I was not expecting it,
I went to see who it was for.

I opened up the door and saw
a messenger who looked at me,
then handed me a small, white box,
whatever could this package be?

As I walked back into the room,
the students asked me,tell us please,
what do you have within that box?
I glanced and saw the name of See's.

But there was more than candy there,
for on the top a note was glued
and when I quickly read the words,
My thoughts were filled with gratitude.

A parents words were written there,
I'd taught her daughter history.
Now she was headed off to school
to chase her dreams at USC .

This mother said the kindest things.
What every teacher hopes to hear.
She said she sent a girl to me,
a woman had emerged from here.

A woman now articulate,
both self assured, with wisdom too.
She said, I'd like to thank you now,
so here's a little gift for you.

The students asked me what it said.
I found I simply could not speak.
Surprised and taken by these words,
I said not now and took my seat.

Now many years have come and gone.
That note still rests within my drawer,
reminding me of bygone days
and of that knock upon the door.

Poem of the Month contest entry

Just before leaving for college, Deanna and her friend Jessica ( also from the same class ) came by to say goodbye. I kissed each of them on the cheek and wished them well on life's new adventure....I have since retired and moved to another state but often wonder how Deanna, Jessica and many others have done in life.....I still hear from some, from time to time, and we were overjoyed to be visited recently by another wonderful, ex-student, now a female doctor, living in California...I am a believer that there are more important things in life than money ..My memories attest to that..
