Author Notes
The last poem that I wrote was titled, "Protesters! Go Home!" Why the change? This is a different example. In, "Protesters! Go Home!", it was about a church group that interfered with veteran's funerals, which is a misuse of the right to protest as they were not only disrespectful, but misusing protesting to gain publicity. In this case an inequity between the business and government as well as on of principles, as an unspecified party filed a complaint. There are several speculations about this, but in short; they objected to having to pay permit fees while she didn't. Also despite the Pink Flamingos fame, others thought it an eyesore. This made the media, but 98ROCK took exception and rallied around the bird, adding to it the symbolism of Government that has an adversarial attitude against businesses. I didn't realize the extent that businesses felt this until I talked about the other Pink Flamingo Poem, "The Deaths of Bawlmer's Flamingos." It became a speculation that with the loss of the cities revenues from profit, that there was a possibility that they were now using citations, fines and permit fees to generate revenue, which is harsh for businesses as at this time, customers and only going to pay so much and won't tolerate an increase in products or services.
I was my brain damaged mother's guardian for eighteen years and basically anything that involved her was the reverse Midas. It turned to crap and fast! Since there was always a problem with something, I quickly gained an understanding of government and made it work for me. I learned not to explode (except in the privacy of my house) or take it out on the government worker and in fact, seeked their guidance to circumvent the problem of governmental appeal. Other cases, I just sat there and made different governmental inter-agencies hash it out or promised to do it higher up. The people in the field did wonders. A case of this working was despite the language of the Guardianship papers giving me total control, my mother's Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order under the statute at the time, wasn't applied to medical decisions and the court told me that I needed a court ordered DNR. Not wanted to spend the $1,000 or two for a lawyer, I walked into the judges chambers and asked how I could accomplish this. That took a month and then another six months to get the judge and two doctors together. Every time I got the two doctors together, the judges chambers were closed. In a sense, it was better because my uncle succumbed to the same fate as my mom and I was able to argue that if a DNR order wasn't granted, then that would prove that Maryland's law is unequally applied as my Uncle had a DNR placed on him and there was a possibility that a persons sex was at issue. In the end, I was not only granted the DNR, it came in handy as a nurse couldn't handle it and let us know that my mom was in heart failure. It allowed us a week of critical time that I didn't expect to exist so we could say our goodbyes and she could go out knowing that she was love. It also came in handy to enforce our belief that she be allowed to pass on.
A case of government not working was when I made a complaint about receiving five notices from the Baltimore County Social Services and next thing you know, it was hell on earth and the constant threat that my mother's medical assistance would be terminated. After a month, it was obvious that this was personal and I fought to get to the bottom of this and showed up at the Social Services Department. I was told that I could not speak with the social worker and I then called from the lobby her supervisor who was quite smart with me. I told the supervisor that if I walk out of the building without talking with the social worker, I have everything organized to present it to the media and the Head Injury Foundation and in addition of showing up with the cameras and reporters, I will also have mom in front of them. Well, ten minutes later, I talked to the social worker.
Before she talked about my mom, she told me her story, "Mr. Kohlman, I originally was coming in here to get my checks and one time, I figured that I was taking Social Services money and it dawned on me to take it another way, by working for them. That was twenty five years ago and I know my job. My problem is that I have to follow up on the sticky notes that my supervisor puts on your mom's file." I asked to see it and when she turned the file around, it was covered with the notes. The post pads.
I told her to tell her supervisor, "You let her know that if this continues, not only will there be the media, but I will run for Baltimore County Executive and with God's sense of justice and help, I will win. Then everyday until she not longer works, she will be following my stickies. That solved the problem...
With Cafe Hon, it struck many that this wasn't right and 98ROCK took up her cause and decided to get a permit to protest in front of city hall and not only air their Morning Show from their, but to fill up the War Memorial Plaza with plastic pink flamingos. Not knowing what to do with them they were offered for $3.00 a piece with the proceeds going to the Rock and Recovery Fund. In an ironic twist, the show was grateful that the city took care of them, by providing a shelter to broadcast from. Oops. There was to be a counter protest held, by the Department of General Services and that was met for them. 98ROCK donated the use of their tent and in a turn of fate, also joined in the protest. Yes, against themselves while promoting a cleaner city. I do sense a bit of PR here as an agreement had already been reached.
