A poem about successive lives

The Diamond

by Badger_29

While drifting through a mysterious dream,
a pale sparkle caught my eye
and knowing that things were not as they seem,
it eluded me, much as I tried

Slowly revolving, I saw a reflection ~
     a fey apparition sublime
and kneeling in reverent genuflection,
I felt strangely frozen in time

Arising, attempting in vain, to clear,
an obscuring cloud from my vision
Was the won’drous face so painfully near
     reality, or merely illusion?

Feelings of apprehension and dread,
washed over me in a black wave
and for a moment I feared I was dead,
as I saw myself in a shallow grave

I detected a rose scented perfume then,
a scent from someplace long ago
from a special place, I remembered not when -
     it seemed vaguely familiar, though

At this point I heard a beckoning sound,
as sweet as a silver bell ~
it came from a distance, I found,
but through time or space, I could not tell

As I turned to the sound, I beheld a sight
that warmed my soul to the bone
it was your face I saw, and I thought that I might
like to somehow have you for my own

I desperately tried to give you a sign,
as things moved in painful slow - motion
numbness was seizing my mind
and I felt as if under the ocean

I saw your lips move, but I heard not a sound
I knew you were trying to reach me
there was symbolism all around,
and I wondered what it was trying to teach me

I was abruptly transported to a distant land,
     to a long-ago person I’d known
and, as that person looked down at his hand,
I saw that the hands were my own!

When I looked up, you were there on the shore
       holding a mystical shell ~
You held it to my ear:  I heard the oceans roar,
but, as I reached for your hand, you fell!

It seems you had enchanted me, lifetimes ago,
     and our destinies entwined together
through successive lives we would learn and grow,
and grow wiser through storms that we weathered

And as each time that, by fate, our paths crossed,
and we pooled together our abilities -
cleaving that which we gained, leaving that which we lost,
     slowly weaving a complex tapestry

Once when I was a sailor, you made my rope,
our trades seemed to complement each other
then you provided me with much needed hope,
when, in one life, you were my Mother

When I was a merchant, you were a buyer
and when I raised horses, you rode well -
when I wrote music, you sang in a choir,
and when I raced horses , you rang the bell!

Once you were drowning, and I saved your life
and as I pulled you out of the water
I knew that one day, you would be my wife,
and that we would raise a son and a daughter

As each successive scene was revealed,
     mysterious truths were uncovered:
facts came to light which had once been concealed,
as the purpose for life I discovered

I found myself working in an African mine
at gems I attempted to quarry
I had found one that appeared to be one of a kind,
but this was just the start to this part of the story

In my next life I encountered that very same rock,
and cut it into a faceted treasure
I stored it carefully away in a strong box,
knowing it would one day give someone great pleasure

After that I wore a jeweler’s shoes,
large profits attempting to lure -
and at one point I made a magnificent ring,
from a gem I’d felt compelled to procure

~II~

At this point in time, from my dream I awoke,
and marveled at the people I’d been
But the memories slowly dissipated like smoke,
as I tried in vain to recall all that I’d seen

I went out to a party at night,
and by chance, met a beautiful girl
her olive eyes had an enchanting light,
that hypnotized me with each two-step and whirl

As we got better acquainted, I could not shake the feeling,
that I’d somehow known her before -
and my future with her, she was surely sealing,
with the rose scented perfume she wore

So one night while deserting on peaches and cream,
I planned what our future should bring -
so I went to a place that I’d seen in a dream,
     and bought a magnificent ring

Then on a bright July day we were married,
as it was with you that I desired to linger -
and I thought to myself, “Too long we had tarried”,
as I placed that ring on your finger . . .

Then as from that gem, sunlight reflected,
an ancient pact between us passed -
I knew that my once scattered thoughts had collected,
and that I’d found my soul-mate  at last

You see life, like that ring, has no end or beginning,
as these lives connect one to another
and as the wheel of life is inexorably turning,
it’s our duty to look out for each other

There is a perfect spark in our soul, directly from God
 and since energy is neither
destroyed nor created ~
we’ve always been here in one form or another,
and to improve and evolve we are fated

So remember, as the wheel of life revolves,
it can only help your soul to be kind -
nice folk who follow this law will evolve,
but mean folk that don’t will be left behind
