My talent comp in the Jr Miss TX pageant 1980

Growing Up

by Oatmeal

Do you remember the things that happened to you while
you were growing up?

I remember them. I remember watching the leaves turn
all shades of brown and orange and fighting the wind
as it whisked them away and left me with only the
memories of the moments we once shared.

I remember my precious pillow that absorbed the tears
of my losses. The loss of my second favorite doll or
that of the balloon I had barely held.

The things that were so important to me then, now
hidden behind the Christmas tree in the attic are
lost from thought.

Now my troubles are about people and not things. I
cry when I feel I had hurt someone, or when someone
has hurt me. All the while knowing that this will
also be lost from thought.

I still watch the leaves and feel the pain as they
blow away, but now happiness surges through me
with the knowlege that they are not gone forever.
A knowlege that I did not have at one time and
one that will grow with each new experience.

And someday I'll look back on today and then I
will know.................

In 1980 I was a senior in high school. I had the title of Jr miss Austin that year. The pageant was held in San Marcos, TX. My best friend helped me write this poem. I used it for my talent competition. The picture here was my picture in the pageant and also my senior picture.

Thank you so much for your time.

Love you,
