Childhood fears

A child's fear

Be careful what you say to children
I fear the ancient creatures that reside
Below my bed--depraved dark elves, a gnome.
The hideous might come to lie beside
My soul--within the safety of my home.

The sounds I hear at night are not ones of
Delight. Horrendous voices are unkind.
I hope and pray adored Lord God will love
Enough in my embodied soul and mind...

Who had the nerve to tell the innocent
About malignant ghosts, sprites, dwarves, and trolls?
To Satan's lair their children's souls they sent
By scaring them about the night bell's tolls.

Whilst they do not discern the truth that be
I think that they are all a part of me.

"be" in the penultimate line is subjunctive. It is grammatically correct with the use of the main verb "discern", although its use is moribund in English.

This is an English sonnet--three quatrains and a concluding couplet. The rhyme scheme is abab cdcd efef gg. There is a turn at the ninth line. The concluding couplet should sum up the whole poem.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
