What if...?

Ah, how the years have ebbed and flowed -
an age since I first chose this road.
For just a moment, nothing more,
I paused... then freely on I strode.

The road less-travelled holds in store
a myriad of treasures, for
delight awaits around each bend
to make the troubled spirit soar.

But sombre, too, some paths I wend;
from light to darkness they extend,
for beauty has its price to pay,
as now my journey nears its end.

Oh, what strange thoughts are these, I pray,
that tease my mind all through the day
and heavy 'gainst contentment lay ....
                                             ...  what if I'd gone the other way?
