A sestina about school life and being part of a class.

Classmates

by Mike K2

Being born ... In your parents' heart;- timeless...
Life springs forth, takes hold; more tidal pool than sea.
Through play and adventure, lessons for life are learned;
both joys and imagined sorrows to be treasured.
With whispets and senses you find ones, to make friends;
a special time in your life to be cherished.

You make your way to school;- new life cherished.
Time-filled study, playground thoughts become timeless
as days are made shorter by seeking out your friends.
"One's safe harbor," tidal pool sprouts life of a sea;
your enjoyments are shared, forever treasured.
Elements of school and people are learned.

Middle school... New people, new lessons learned;
reviled experiences, fewer cherished.
Sprouting teens become tempests; feared lost, not treasured.
Bell signals change, hall fills with life, "routine," timeless;
caught in a hormone laden and raging sea!
Out of new groups, a few old ones;- your friends.

High school -- Remembering ... Just a few friends;
more an association with groups is learned
as you break barriers, ready to head for sea.
Young adults vie and woo; a few moments cherished.
Striving to make our mark, for the days' timeless;
hoping for a life that can be treasured.

Though life's not as it once seemed, it's treasured;
not so much a part now, your classmates, your friends.
With life now so much different, and school timeless;
organized lessons gives way to ones now hard learned.
Classmates still stand out, memories are cherished;
looking back at the world for a calm sea.

No matter the currents, familial sea
sought with life so long ago, remains treasured.
Realizing that school life held so much now cherished,
discovering once again adventure and friends!
Some never left you, new ones to you are learned...
Parents and classmates to become timeless!

One's peace with the sea is discovered with friends;
each other is treasured, more about yourself learned.
Classmates remain cherished and always timeless.

Penning this poem was a complete surprise to me and I did so with the spirit of capturing what school and classmates mean, not only during our attendance of attending school, but throughout our lives as well.

Even with our,"school years," the aspects and dynamics change with both maturity and experiences, and not necessarily for the better. I felt I was in a unique position to become a poetic scribe for this and that the sestina is one of the best forms for such a poem.

Another classmate, Karen Powers Bolling is a contributing inspiration as she supplied me with three of the ending words of, "timeless, treasured, and Cherished."
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
