Walking Baltimore's Streets

by Mike K2

Downtown Baltimore, streets filled with people;
and containing carnival-like atmosphere.
Up on Federal Hill, rooftops bow to steeple;
as you soak up every diversion one finds there.
Like Easter Island teachers at your school.
skyscrapers stand like gods to throngs without care,

During day, on neighborhood's livened streets;
pass busily by, minions at work or on chore.
Rushing themselves along; walking to their own beats,
flittering like darting beasts; -time, wishing for more...
But some stop to a chime from a friend who greets;
others simply wave, entering the store.

But what does it hold to walk streets at night?
What will come though one's fear, demon or kind friend?
Keep it together, acknowledge not showing fright,
hardened stares appreciate a smile in the end.
Many are more affordable then at first sight,
or solace sought with a prayer to send.

The shadows of the street contain a lure,
stately row homes of rock now dappled with soot
issue forth a hint of a servant manning door.
Guessing if ghosts of merchants and captains under foot
still walk amongst us in the town they adore.
Historical plaques mark climes where you're put...

Abandoned buildings still show history,
echoing the lives of prior residents;
creating speculation, -air of mystery.
Mention a thought, find historical precedent
and story from one knowing the history;
letting it known, past is never absent.

Life on Baltimore's streets will never die,
it may change for a future generation;
adapting to new ideas, and old to retry.
Baltimore's people not streets, its veneration;
individuals within a scene to spy
to greet and indulge the next generation.

There are times when Baltimore's streets seem harsh and mean;
but they provide a way of life for all, and more ...
The streets also present plenty good for all to enjoy and glean.
