clouds open
gentle rain falls
sustaining
life renewing
Earth drinks fill

velvet green; beautiful blooms

Author Notes I read this format was called a Whitney. I do not know if that is true, but I wanted to post this because I love rain (as long as everyone is safe).

Chapter 3
follow the SON

By Jannypan (Jan)

Gun legislation's in the news again
spurred on by an attack from within.
Why had he planned this deadly wrath
as he shot all in his path?
His motive we'll not know.
Pray for Orlando.
Follow the SON.
Lay down guns--
believe--
peace.

Chapter 5
God's Canvas

By Jannypan (Jan)

With delight, I gaze at the sky nightly
at stars and planets shining brightly
puncturing the velvet background.
In awe, I stand with no sound.
The out-of-this world art
brings joy to my heart
as God paints love
from above--
beauty--
free !

Chapter 12
Heaven's Light

By Jannypan (Jan)

Author Note:Heaven's Light / poetry potlatch 9-17-2016

The stars have disappeared this night,
and mister moon has lost his glow
I wonder what would cause this sight.

Should I be worried? I don't know.
This darkness portends scary things
that cast an eerie, dreary show

no happiness that moonlight brings
for lovers walking hand in hand.
Now, only lonesome loons will sing;

their songs will spread across the land.
But God sends sunlight back--His plan.

Chapter 13
His Light

By Jannypan (Jan)

Author Note:His Light / faith contest entry

There's calm before dawn breaks
spreading light
as nature's palette awakens,
and shows all what it takes
for this sight.
With God, the artist, it begins

when He paints Heaven's skies.
Awesome view
unfolds for all.  We see His grace
reflected in our eyes.
This is true--
believe in Him. He will embrace

for none can supersede
His power
as His light always shines--our guide
to make darkness recede.
Don't cower,
walk with Him, keep His love inside.

Chapter 14
JESUS and the FIREFLY

By Jannypan (Jan)

Author Note:JESUS and the FIREFLY / potlatch / * notes

When I'm around, young children flock to me at night.
Some years ago, I called a small barn home.
While resting my tired wings, I heard
the cow say, "I can see we're not alone."
The stock soon spy a baby boy in fading light

in swaddling cloths asleep. Adults surround with pride.
Soon he's awake, so I will stay awhile.
Each time my light begins to flash
the babe born Christmas night gives me a smile.
The night sky brightens--stars start merging; they will guide.

The critters stir. I flit and fly and flash with fun.
My humble light is like a toy. What joy!
So proud am I, and please believe
that I was needed.  I helped this young boy.
With love and truth and light He shines and we've all won.

***notes
style--symmetrina--invented by FS writer pantygynt
The topic for the Symmetrina is to write a first person Symmetrina from the POV of one of the animals in that Bethlehem stable. Any adaptation of the traditional Christmas story will do and I don't suppose the ox, ass and sheep were the only animals there, be as original as you wish, you rats and roaches.

***The symmetrina stanza is five lines long.
1. Line one, An Alexandrine Hexameter (a line of 12 syllables). The 'a' rhyme.
2. Line two, a pentameter (a line of 10 syllables or 11 sylables if it has a feminine ending.) The 'b' rhyme.
3. Line three, a tetrameter (a line of 8 syllables or nine syllables if it has a feminine ending.) The 'c' rhyme.
4. Line four, as for line two. The 'b' rhyme. [10syls.]
5. Line five, as for line one. The 'a' rhyme [12 syls.].
~~May have as many verses as you wish.~~

By Jannypan (Jan)

Chapter 16
Nearer to God

By Jannypan (Jan)

Into the battle he was thrown
feeling alone
death all around
a killing ground

with bullets constantly flying
soldiers dying
he took a hit
but would not quit

reminiscing, he said he knew
God helped him through
his end is near--
he holds God dear

Author Notes Google advanced image. This is dedicated to all soldiers everywhere who fight for our freedom.

Chapter 17
The Love of Jesus

By Jannypan (Jan)

there must be something I can say-
listen to the love of Jesus
to make your life brighter today;
there must be something I can say-
through Him our sins are washed away
His death was a signal to us;

there must be something I can say-
listen to the love of Jesus

This is a triolet [that fact is hidden by the background]. A triolet is a poem of only eight lines with a rhyme scheme abaaabab. The fourth and seventh lines are the same exact line as the first. The eighth line is the same exact line as the second.

Chapter 18
The Christmas Star

By Jannypan (Jan)

The Christmas star is shining bright
Proclaiming the birth of Jesus
Wise men followed its streaming light
The Christmas star is shining bright
Through His love, you will be made right
He lived and died for all of us
The Christmas star is shining bright
Proclaiming the birth of Jesus

Chapter 19
There, But for the Grace of God

By Jannypan (Jan)

Dirty, disheveled wearing clothes unclean
holding a cardboard sign with words spelled wrong
wondering how people can be so mean.
No one cares; and he no longer stands strong.

Worked at a job--he was the best by far.
He jetted off free on company time.
Once he had a house, family, and car.
He was living his dream while in his prime.

But, he was not prepared for that sad day.
His wife wanted a divorce and their boy--
she no longer loved him in the same way.
Living this life with him gave her no joy.

So, he gave in to all of her demands.
Now with no hope, on the corner he stands

Author Notes Google advanced image. I am not asking for you to take in the homeless However, many of us are just a paycheck away from being like the man in the poem. Be kind. I see more and more people, mostly men, with signs asking for help because of the downturn in the oil economy in my oil town. [I intended this to be a sonnet, but I could not get the rhythm right.]

Chapter 22
What is Faith?

By Jannypan (Jan)

Is faith based solely on what one can see?
Are blind men without faith because their eyes
don't see beauty that surrounds you and me?
No, the creator is aware and wise.
His believers know they will win the prize.

With faith, one believes what he cannot see;
and, he can picture it in his mind's eye.
A smell or touch may evoke a mem'ry
of pure joy without the need to see why.
Seeing is not that which faith relies.

Tangible results can easily be found--
like the flower's scent with its sweet perfume.
Yes, your God shows love for you most profound.
Faith is not based on sight as some assume.
We weren't there to see Jesus rise from the tomb.

It is believing in your heart that He
will be near and protect you through the storms.
Though life's perils may cause great misery,
with God, you will be cradled in his arms.
He'll be beside you as you face life's harms.

With faith, birds sing, children laugh, and love grows,
a soft, gentle rain caresses your skin.
Your faith guides you to believe. God knows
man's desire to know and understand Him,
and He's always available to them.

Chapter 24
Let God Into Your Life

By Jannypan (Jan)

Author Note:Let God Into Your Life / 2nd place winner

After the Christmas rush is over, and it's here,
be thankful for what you have, that you hold dear.
Concentrate on your beliefs without fear,
determine to improve in the new year,
erase all negativity, hatred, and adhere
foremost to your spirituality as it becomes clear.

Grant God your heart and soul,
He will guide and make you whole.
Insist on His presence, allow Him to control
just as He does, but you must enroll.
Keep Him in your heart as you extol
love He has for all. He's there to console

mankind when we feel the need,
never forget, for each of us He did bleed
on the cross.  Don't allow Satan to mislead,
prioritize your life and you'll succeed,
quit making excuses and proceed.
Recall His teachings and take heed.

Shower others with blessings and pray,
treat them with respect and keep evil at bay.
Unite with the Lord and don't stray.
Victory will be yours on judgment day
when the Lord lifts you up. Don't delay.

Xenophobia tries to sway--has gained a stronghold;
yet, one mustn't cower.  With God, be bold.
Zero in on how to claim your place in Heaven with its streets of gold.

Author Notes ***If you do not wish to review based on the topic, then please skip.

*xenophobia--fear of outsiders [their customs, religion, & other
cultural attributes] The use if this word doesn't mean I condone ALL
of what it means. I know there are many whose ancestors immigrated
here.
