Chapter 1
The Three Angels coin

By c_lucas

OLD FRIENDS-NEW ENEMIES
CHAPTER ONE
THREE ANGEL COIN
ARIZONA TERRITORY
SPRING, 1884

Narrated by Jo Rollins/Thompson

My husband, Seth, found me in the second barn, playing with Lucille’s latest litter; four kits. Iron cages littered the barn. One held an eagle healing from a broken wing. If I ever found the bastard who shot it, I would reward him with a shot in both elbows.

Another cage held a wounded Coyote-a twelve shotgun did the damage-with two pups. Originally, she had six pups, but four of them didn’t survive the blast. The S. O. B. used the first round on the mother and the second on the pups.

I thought of what I did to my uncles; shooting their cocks off, for years of abusing me. I’d shoot this bastard’s cock off an inch at a time. It probably would take me three shots.

Unlike Lucille and her litter, I followed Uncle Sky’s suggestion and didn’t give them names. I numbered them and left them as wild as I found them. As I have done before, I cried every time we released the healthy animals back into the wilds.

Uncle Sky and I had an agreement. I could keep Lucille as my friend and pet, but her litter of Bobcats would be released when the time came. Needless to say, they had a minds of their own and came visiting when they wanted pemmican, or company.

Seth ignored the critters and hugged me from behind. “It’s time to go.”

We had three hired hands who would looked after the ranch. The youngest would take care of the animals in Barn Two.

I left the side gate of Lucille’s cage open so she could hunt food for her litter.

This would be the third quarter meeting of The Three Angels Cattle and Horse Corporation. It was launched four years ago when our Uncle Billy found gold nuggets on his newly purchased property.  A few weeks earlier, Uncle Milo and Uncle Matt, along with a whole bunch of cousins, came to my chosen mother’s aide when a low-down pole cat shot her oldest son in the back.

To make a long story short, Mother got her revenge and ended up with the Rocking R and a husband, Leroy Rollins. No one in Devil’s Fork could marry them, so Uncle Matt wired his partner, Catherine, inviting her to the wedding and to bring a judge with her. Aunt Catherine did and made it a double wedding by marrying Uncle Matt.

Seth and I ended up getting married the next day. But to get back to the story. It was decided all the land around Uncle Billy's ranch would be purchased by the memberos of the family. Uncle Matt and Aunt Catherine loaned my cousins, Seth and me the money so we could buy into what he called The Three Angel’s Cattle and Horse Corporation. My chosen mother bought it for me in her name.We traded the land for stock in the corporation.

It turned out that the gold didn’t work out; Uncle Billy hired a mining engineer, Roy Epson, who found copper and coal on the corporation’s property.  He was voted in as general manager just last year. At this meeting, we would divvy up last year’s profit.

“Hold up.” Seth grabbed Cricket’s reins. The signs on the ground showed the hoof prints of a horse and burro.

I steadied my horse and looked around. My man released the reins and started off in a new direction. Forty minutes later, we came across the horse and burro, but the man was nowhere to be seen. Seth took some pigging strips and hobbled the two animals.

A rifle shot sounded and a bullet ricochet off a boulder near Seth’s head. I jumped off Cricket, firing three times before my feet hit the ground.

“Hold your fire!” Seth motioned for me to stop shooting.

I did, but kept my thirty eight aimed in the general area of the shot.

“Mister, we don’t mean you any harm. You’re on Thompson's land and it looks like you’re prospecting.”

“What if I am?”

“Then you need my permission. I’m Seth Thompson.” Seth glanced at me and shook his head.  He turned his attention back to the hidden prospector. “Do you have your Three Angels coin?

“Did you say your name was ‘Thompson?'”

“Seth Thompson.”

“Then you have the Bobcat Girl with you?”

“She’s my wife.”

“Her bullets were so damn close, I damn near crapped in my pants. Excuse me, Mrs. Thompson. Most things don’t survive when you start slinging bullets their way.”

“Your apology is accepted. Why don’t you come on out so we can get acquainted?”

The prospector hurried out; holding his rifle over his head. He stopped, giving each his attention. “Are you sure she ain’t your daughter? She’s awful small to be your wife.” He showed Seth the Three Angels coin.

Seth gave me our secret signal and I holstered my gun, but left the leather throng off.

“Flying Angels!” Seth yelled.

He threw the coin high and I shot it down.

It took a few minutes for him to find it, but he did and handed it to the Prospector. “Now it has Jo’s personal signature. Keep the coin in your pocket. Don’t show it to any one unless they can prove they have the right to see it.”

We shook hands with the prospector and rode toward the Rocking R. Due to our side trip, we arrived very late. I kept busy for a while giving everyone a hug and a kiss. Then the meeting started in earnest.

Kenny sat next to Uncle Sky, who put his arm on the back of his chair and held the boy close.

Roy spoke for a of couple hours. He had a man with him, who he called his secretary. The third hour he and his secretary handed out sheets of paper. He said it was the earnings for the third quarter. By the end of his explanation everyone understood they were a few thousand dollars richer, Some more so than others.

Toward the end of the meeting, there was a racket coming from Leroy's office. Esther and Catherine hurried to it.

CHAPTER TWO
THE TELEGRAPH
ARIZONA TERRITORY
SPRING, 1884
NARRATED BY CAITLIN 'JO' ROLLINS-THOMPSON
The ending of the last chapter: Roy spoke for a  couple of hours.

***
I hurried into the room and stood behind Aunt Catherine who was giving instructions to her mother-in-law, Esther-who I called, "Mother."

"Type 'Ready' Then 'Send'."

I stared in amazement as the machine came alive and made funny marks on a thin ribbon. When the ribbon stopped, Catherine instructed, Mother, "Tear it off and feed it into there. Make sure you get the front in first."

Mother found the front end of the ribbon and fed it in the second part of the machine until it stopped.

"Now, Punch 'Read.' Then 'Print,'" Aunt Catherine said.
The machine made a funny noise, and I looked at the paper it was spitting out.

"Good the fire is under control and they'll be here tomorrow evening." She turned and hugged me so tight I thought my heart would burst.

"Aunt Heather and Nana Sullivan will be here tomorrow. They're my friends, I call them by family titles, but now, I have a real family."

Seth grabbed me as my tears rolled down my face. I hugged him as tight as I could.

"That's good, they'll be here by tomorrow." Catherine made it a group hug and kissed me above the eyes. She replaced Mother and started punching keys. "I've reserved all of the empty rooms. The rest can stay at the other hotel, or in the railroad car. I have a large tent I can use as a dining room."

Uncle Milo put his arm around Aunt Julia. "We have some spare rooms at our place."

She nodded at Aunt Catherine, her sister. "We can handle a couple and their children."

"Let's mount up and ride into town." Uncle Matt twirled Aunt Catherine and soundly kissed her before he set her down.

We were over half way to town when Lucille's brother, Toby, made his appearance. I'd painted purple hearts on his flanks. I opened my arms and he jumped in front, making himself comfortable. I hugged him and kissed his nose. He began to nuzzle my shirt pockets for the pemmican I kept for my bobcats.

The trip to town took a little over two hours to make, plus the time to care for our animals. We separated for the latter task. Uncle Sky put a chain collar around Toby's neck and attached a chain lead. He headed for the original hotel and put Toby in the cage we kept behind it.

A young boy, carrying a box too heavy for him, tripped and fell down the General Store's steps.. The owner, Saul, held a heavy bag and almost fell on top of him. He grunted as he regained his balance and set the bag in the back of the wagon. He went to help the boy.

"Leave the little bastard alone. It's about time he learned to do a man's share of work." The farmer placed his supplies in the back of the wagon, before going to the front and picked something off the seat.

My blood ran cold when I saw the whip in his hands.

"Now you little shit, get those supplies on the wagon and hurry your butt up!" He threw the whip back and went to strike the boy.

The whip was half-way to its mark when I drew and shot it out of the bastard's hand.

"What the Hell! Who the Hell are you to interfere with me when I'm correcting my son?" He reached down for his whip.

I pulled "Baby" from her resting place in the waistband at the back of my pants and used its five bullets to cut the whip to pieces. I holstered my guns, but kept my hand near my hip gun and turned my attention toward the boy after glancing at the men watching me. Even Aunt Catherine and Mother had their hands in their purses, near their guns.

"What's your name?"

"Rodney."

"May I call you, Rod?"

"That's fine with me."

Seth and my uncles, Milo and Matt headed my way. I shook my head, but they kept on coming and joined me.

"Rod, do you see that real tall man coming from behind the saloon?"

"Yes, ma'am."

His calling me, "ma'am" surprised me. "If you want to be free from this bully, walk toward him and he'll protect you."

"You can't take my boy!" He stared at Milo, the only one wearing a badge. "That bitch tried to kill me!"

Milo laughed. "Mr., I think you're doing a right fine job of getting it done all by yourself. First you tried to whip the boy in front of the Bobcat Girl. Then you call her a bitch in front of her husband and uncle, two of the fastest guns in the territory. You insulted the women and children with your dirty mouth. I know for a fact they're holding onto guns inside their purses. Worse of all, you showed your contempt for me by throwing trash on my street. Now, show some penitence by picking up the pieces and your supplies. Then get out of my town and don't come back!" Milo removed the loop from his gun and loosening it in his holster.

"She destroyed my whip and I can't drive my team without one."

"Seth, she's your wife. Take a lesson from Matt and use your money to buy a whip. Jo, go introduce Rod to Toby. You don't have to watch this."

"No sir, Uncle Milo. I started this and I'll see it through." The boy came back and stood by me.

"I didn't mean to get you into trouble."

"You haven't. If your father had any sense, he'll leave."

"Matt and Milo? Your last names wouldn't be 'Mathews,' would it?"

"That's none of your business." Milo took the whip from Seth and threw it at the man. "We might get the notion you're from the wrong side of Missouri. I'll guarantee that it wouldn't be healthy for you. Leave and don't come back."

After the visitor left, Esther stared at Milo.

"I know, but we promised Billy the killing was over. Let it be, Esther." Milo took her into his arms and kissed her on the cheek. He stared at Matt. "So much for disguises."

(Some interesting facts.)
Teleprinters were invented in order to send and receive messages without the need for operators trained in the use of Morse code. A system of two teleprinters, with one operator trained to use a typewriter, replaced two trained Morse code operators. The teleprinter system improved message speed and delivery time, making it possible for messages to be flashed across a country with little manual intervention.[42]
Early teleprinters used the ITA-1 Baudot code, a five-bit code. This yielded only thirty-two codes, so it was over-defined into two "shifts", "letters" and "figures".

Brigit's Gift - PART ONE

By c_lucas

OLD FRIENDS/NEW ENEMIES
CHAPTER TWO

BRIGIT'S GIFTS PART ONE
NARRATED BY HEATHER SULLIVAN-MARTIN
ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY, 1884

End of last book: "The burns won't kill Christopher, but the tumor at the base of his skull will. Phillip will be working closely with Brigit and me. She will be working through me."

I cast a small sleeping spell by kissing Maybelle on each cheek.

Mother caught the sleeping girl before she hit the floor.
***
I used Brigit's strength to lift Maybelle and placed her on an empty cot.

"Be yeh all right, me Heather?" I smiled at Mother's question.

"Yes, Mother. I am fine. I know, now, Brigit allowed Christopher to be burned to bring the tumor to my attention."

"That be a rough way ta tell yeh, but Brigit is limited in conversation." She hugged me and we crossed ourselves.

Phillip returned and glanced at Mother before giving me his attention. "We'll need to act fast to save Christopher."

"Mother and I'll treat him for his burns. The tumor will have to wait a few days until we have a sturdier foundation."

Breanna took her leave and returned to tend to Christopher.

"I don't know about this. It's the first time I missed Pennsylvania."

I smiled at him. "There's no need to worry about what we have and don't have. Brigit will see us through." Her image filled my mind. Show Phillip the images of the spine you showed me.

Phillip grabbed his head and staggered backward.

Slowly, please, Brigit.

Phillip stood still as if in a trance. Soon, he returned to his normal state of being. He stared at me, shaking his head. "Wow! And to think you do this on daily basis!"

"I'm training Brigit to communicate at a slower pace. To the best of my knowledge, you're the first male she's working with."

"What about you?"

"At first, you experienced her at my speed. I slowed her down."

"Amazing. I don't see how you do it."

"I'm used to her. She usually knows what I want before I ask."

"Is it the same with your mother?"

"No, Mother has had a direct line to Brigit even when Mrs. Kennedy was living. We never really talked about it, but Mother should have been next in line for Brigit when Mrs. Kennedy died. She's a mid-wife/teacher set in her ways. Over the years, she happily trains young women about Brigit's methods."

"Why did Brigit choose you, instead?"

"I've never gotten an answer. I think things changed when I found you. You opened the door and gave me a glimpse of a doctor's life. I got my Doctor of Medicine with very little funds. Brigit saw a means to combine the old with the new."

Phillip reached out and gathered me in his arms and his soft kisses  fluttered across my lips. "This promises to be quite an interesting experience." He carried me into our curtained area and made sure all were closed.

"So be Brigit's will, I pulled him on top of me. Let's just hold each other."  We spent the night in each other's arms.

The rest of the train trip proved uneventful. There were several people in the welcoming committee. Jo, holding the hand of a young man, waited at the side of the track. When I stepped off the train, Jo released the young man's hand and rushed toward me. Thoughts of a younger Caitlin jumping into my arms filled me with memories. I prepared myself for her onslaught. She surprised me when she lifted me off the ground, whirled me around, while holding me in a bear hug. We were crying when she released me. I put my arms around her and pulled her closer. Mother joining us, pulling us into her arms. "Thank God, yeh be safe, me Caitlin."

Things begin to settle down and introductions were in order. Jo introduced Catherine and I stepped over to hug the woman who'd made our reunion possible.

"I can't begin to thank you for all you have done. I wish I could repay you for your efforts."

"It's my pleasure. Jo has lived through enough Hell. It's about time things turned around for her. Her father will show up one of these days. Jo's the only witness to his crime against herself and her mother. She has a new family waiting to greet him. Let the bastard show up. There are plenty here willing to give him an express ticket to Hell. Myself, included. Now, let's get you settled."

"Seems Brigit has plans for all of us. We have a few debts Sean Wiley left unpaid. Arthur has the largest I.O.U. and Mother carries a large one, too. Brigit's plans are taking shape, and she's willing see all are paid in full."

"There'll be a welcoming party tonight at the hotel."

The celebration ended in gun play. Sean Wiley's plans to kill his daughter failed when Seth pushed her aside and took the bullets meant for her. Sky grabbed the outlaw nearest to him and snapped his neck. Sean let off two shots at the old mountain man, hitting him in the shoulder and left hip bone. A wild shot glanced off of Matt's skull, sending him to the floor.

Arthur caught Jo as she flew past him. He drew his forty-five and unloaded five shots at Sean. One of the shots wounded the outlaw as he fled the chaotic scene. Sean made good his escape despite his wound.

Katherine shot an outlaw in the pelvic bone, then aimed and removed his organ.

Milo was not as forgiving with another outlaw, he gave him a express send-off to Hell, and rushed to Matt, whose bloodied head lay in Katherine's lap.

Katherine stared at her brother-in-law with tears flowing freely down her face. "Did I kill the bastard?"

Milo glanced at her victim, who was busy reaching for the gun a few inches from him. The Marshal shattered his two elbows and used his last two bullet on the outlaw's knees. The fight, being over, he turned toward Kathrine. "Jo couldn't have done it any better."

"Jo?" Katherine asked, then let out a scream! "Where is Jo?"

"She be running into me when Seth pushed her. I saw her run out th' back door after I wounded Sean. I guess she be wanting to get away th' shooting."

The sound of a galloping horse filled the room.

"Then you don't know Jo. She would never run from a gunfight except to get the son-of-a-bitch who shot her husband," Milo declared. "For all that are able, mount up. We need to stop Jo before she catches the bastard. May God have mercy on his soul if she does."

CHAPTER FOUR
BRIGIT'S GIFTS PART TWO

ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY, 1884

NARRATED BY HEATHER SULLIVAN-MARTIN

End of the last chapter: Katherine shot an outlaw in the pelvic bone, then aimed, but missed when she tried to removed his organ.

Milo was not as forgiving with another outlaw, he gave him a send-off to Hell, and rushed to Matt, whose bloodied head lay in Katherine's lap.

Katherine stared at her brother-in-law with tears flowing freely down her face. "Did I kill the bastard?"

Milo glanced at her victim, who was busy reaching for the gun a few inches from him. The Marshal's shots shattered his elbows and used the last two bullet on the outlaw's knees. The fight, being over, he turned toward Kathrine. "Jo couldn't have done it any better."

"Jo?" Katherine asked, then let out a scream! "Where is Jo?"

"She be running into me when Seth pushed her. I be seeing her running out th' back door after I wounded Sean. I guess she wanted to get away from th' shooting."

The sound of a galloping horse filled the room.

"Then you don't know Jo. She would never run from a gunfight except to get the son-of-a-bitch who shot her husband," Milo declared. "For all who are able, mount up. We need to stop Jo before she catches the bastard. May God have mercy on his soul if she does."

The able bodied men started for the door, only to be stopped by my mother and Mona who made sure they weren't trying to hide an injury. A few were forced to sit and wait for treatment to their wounds.
**
The gunfire surprised us, but Mother, Phillip and the rest of our group were unharmed.

"Are you okay, ma'am?

I looked up at an older version of Seth, Caitlin's husband, whom she called, "Samuel".

He held a cane in his left hand and a pistol in his right. He holstered his gun, but not before l caught the odor of gun smoke. The smell permeated the whole room.

"I'm fine, thank you." I started to get up and felt his strong arms helping me when Brigit pushed him back and had me on my feet in no time. He's only trying to help, why don't you help Phillip? Remember to take it slow with him.

My husband was working behind a hastily hung sheet, treating the man Caitlin called "Uncle Sky."

I pulled some clean bandages from my bag and squeezed between Catherine and her husband. "Let me have a look, please." I wiped the blood off Matt's wound and examined it briefly. Head wounds were bad bleeders, even if the bullet didn't penetrate. I applied an antiseptic on the wound.

Catherine placed a hand over mine and I released my hold on the bloodied cloth. I gave her brief instructions. "Apply even pressure. Not too strong. You want to slow the bleeding."

"What can I do to help?" Samuel asked.

I continued to pull items out of bag. "Find an unbroken lamp. I need more light."

He limped off to fulfill my request.

"Is he going to die?" Catherine placed her bloodied palm over a new cloth and added pressure.

"Not too hard. Keep your pressure firm and steady," I cautioned her. "It's just a scalp wound. The bullet didn't enter the skull."

"He's just like his brother, bullets bounce off their hard head." The sound of a new voice made me stop and look up. A rugged looking woman holding what looked to be a short shot gun. Aging had not been too kind to her. "Esther Rollins." She held out her hand and I shook it briefly before going back to the task of bandaging the wound.

"Heather Martin." I replied and finished the introduction. "We came to see Caitlin."

"Johanna is really excited by your visit. Her feet haven't touched the ground since Catherine told us she found you."

Phillip walked up, wiping his bloodied hands on a white hand cloth. "You must be Esther. Sky described you pretty well. He's over behind that hanging sheet."

"How bad is he?"

"I took a bullet out of his left hip and another out of his right shoulder. It was easy, neither had penetrated very deep. He'll need some time to heal." Phillip gave me a funny look when I gave him a mental picture of our next patient.

I nodded and finished bandaging Matt. I smiled at Catherine. "He'll have a headache and will need a few weeks of bed rest, then he'll be fine."

Mona came over. "Mother said Seth is ready for you."

"Seth?" Esther stared at me. "What happened to my son?" Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the weapon in her hands.

BRIGIT'S GIFT- PART THREE
ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY, 1884
NARRATED BY Caitlin, Jo, Rollins-Thompson

An earlier story: Jo steals one of Seth's horses and his food. Seth follows her trail and meets her in a small canyon. He sees her whipped-scarred and cigar-burned body and takes her under his protection. They eventually marry.
**
Ending from a previous chapter: "Jo?" Katherine asked, then let out a scream! "Where is Jo?"

"She be running into me when Seth pushed her. I saw her run out th' back door after I wounded Sean. I guess she be wanting to get away from th' shooting."

***
I wore a split skirt and a red and black flannel shirt under my green gown; a gift from Catherine. Seth suggested I put my small gun, Baby, a four inch thirty-eight, in my purse and to keep my longer pistol and holster in my saddle bag. My Winchester '73 was in its saddle boot.

Seth and I were visiting with Arthur and his wife, Mona, when my father made his entrance; his gun aimed at me. Seth was facing the door and I was talking to Mona. Seth yelled, "Look Out." He sent me flying into Arthur's arms when two shots sounded.

Seth lay on the floor with two bullet holes in his back. Mona knelt over him.

Arthur shoved me behind him. He drew his gun and emptied it at my father, who started running for the door.

Baby hung up on the pemmican strips I fed to my bobcats. My father was gone before I could free my gun. Arthur's wild shooting struck him at least once.

I broke free of Arthur's grip and ran out the back entrance to the stable where Cricket, my horse, was resting in the hotel's livery. I pulled off my dress and threw it over a corral rail, as I flung open the livery's doors and raced to saddle my horse.

In no time at all, Cricket was saddled and my long gun, tied low, rested on my hip. I jumped on her and raced to the back of the old hotel to get one of my pet bobcats, Toby. He put his paws on my shoulders and licked my face while I hugged him and kissed his nose. Once freed, I mounted Cricket and held out a strip of pemmican for Toby. He jumped in front of me and gobbled his treat.

"Go!" I urged my horse to follow my father's trail. Cricket was no longer a pony and could keep up with Seth's stallion. My father's horse was a poor match. A few miles later, I caught sight of him. His horse reared and dumped him on the trail, then took off like demons were chasing him.

Someone or something scared it, an old friend I have not seen in several years; Nana Kennedy's ghost. She had her foot on my father's chest, holding him to the ground.

Toby jumped down, ran to her captive, and growled at him. My father screamed louder and I could smell him as he messed his pants.

I dismounted and ran toward my nana, who held up a hand. "Yeh know yeh can't be touchin' me, cailin." She ground her boot into my squirming father's and Toby licked his face, my father fainted.

Nana pointed to Cricket and a travois appeared hitched behind her. Nana stepped off  her prisoner and he floated as she waved him onto his new transportation. Ropes appeared and lashed him in place with his head a couple of feet from Cricket's behind. She answered a call from Nature, barely missing him. Toby jumped behind her saddle and snarled at the unconscious, smelly man.

I held my nose. "How do you expect me to ride so close to that smell?" A small pink cloud covered Cricket, Toby and me. The scent of roses filled the air. "We best be goin'. There be men gainin' on yeh. "Brigit'll be  taking care of th' tracks."

After we left, a brief storm washed out our track. The riders arrived and I heard Uncle Milo cuss. The rain quit as quickly as it started.

"They can't see us," I said to Nana.

"Nay, cailin, but they be hearin' us."

I bit my lips to keep from laughing as the men searched for our tracks. They rode off along the trail, still searching. It was pre-dawn and they could see without help of lanterns and torches. Uncle Milo led them down the original trail.

"Do yeh be havin' a place to hide, cailin?

I recognized where I was. "Follow me." I led her to Seth's and my canyon. Only a few others knew of it. Most were strangers and I wasn't worried. Seth's brother, Solomon rode with us one time and he could find the canyon. I didn't think he would betray me.

Nana had me lead Cricket into the middle of the shallow stream and she freed my horse from the travois. The rope fell off and the prisoner awakened when his dirtied face struck the cold water. With the wave of her hand, she exchanged his soiled clothes for a night shirt. "Yeh best be cleanin' yerself and then get out of th' water."

Father hurried through his task and received a change of clothing from Nana the same way she did it before. "Go in th' cave and stay there."

"I'm hungry. It's your duty to feed me!" He snapped at Nana.

"I'll turn you into lunch." She pointed at Toby and he became three times bigger with two long teeth in the front of his mouth.

My father screamed and ran for the cave with Toby trotting behind him. Once he entered, Nana pointed at the entrance and an old large metal gate appeared, locking him in.

Toby's growl became louder. He stood on his hind legs and reached through the bars, falling short of his prey.

Nana floated toward the area where Uncle Sky buried my two evil uncles, brothers to my father. I walked over to her. Images of my shooting and beating them with a large stick enter my mind.

"Did yeh be feelin' satisfaction when yeh beat them?"

"No, but I did when I threw some sticks on them and set them on fire. They couldn't feel the burning sticks, but I enjoyed the flames and imagined my uncles in Hell."

"What do yeh plan ta do with yer fader?"

"I don't know."

"Yeh best be hurryin'. Yeh Nana Sullivan will be here before noon. Others will be followin." She pointed to the gate and it disappeared. Toby returned to his natural features and entered the cave.

I pulled my long thirty-eight and shot my father when he ran out of the cave.

CHAPTER SIX
BRIGIT'S GIFTS PART FOUR
ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY, 1884

NARRATED BY SOLOMON THOMPSON
END OF CHAPTER: Phillip walked up, wiping his bloodied hands on a white hand cloth.

**
I rode into town with Ma and her husband, Leroy; delayed because of his checking on the round-up.  Along with Leroy was the newspaper man, Charles Righter and his artist, John Humboldt. The former, preparing a book on the cattle drive and the latter furnishing the art work. Writing about our family paved a path to success. With Catherine’s help, both had an interest in the Three Angels Cattle and Horse Association which held the mineral rights to the Copper and Coal mining.

Righter was the one instrumental in finding Jo’s family. Now they were coming to Devil’s Fork for a reunion. Everybody was there, now, except for us. John handled Ma’s buckboard with a newly learned skill. Leroy and I were leading twelve animals including Ma’s latest mule, ‘Sure Foot,’ carrying the same name of all of her personal mules. There was a second riding mule which has never been named. All of the animals were saddled. We entered Devil’s Fork, as another single horseman galloped out of town. Several minutes later, another horseman gave chase. We took our horses to Matt and Catherine’s  hotel livery and cared for them.

When we were finishing up, a large group of riders raced after the first two. I glanced at Ma, holding a green gown she found on the rail. She held it out toward me. “This is the dress Catherine bought Johanna. What is it doing out here on the rail?” I knew the answer. Ma wouldn’t be too happy to hear it.  “We best go inside and find out what’s going on.” I left with Ma and Leroy hot on my tail, running to keep up with my long gait.

Samuel stopped me as I entered and Ma hurried over to her brother, Matt, lying on the floor; blood all over him. “Jo’s father just left. Seth took two bullets meant for her. He’s in a bad way. Jo left here in a hurry..."

I interrupted him. "She left the green dress on the corral’s rail, and Cricket is missing. Is Seth still alive?”

“For the time being. We best be going after Jo. Ma and Seth wouldn’t be in a forgiving mood if anything happened to her.” Samuel nearly fell flat on his ass when he turned toward the back door. I grabbed my big brother, threw him over my shoulder, and ran out the door to the stables. After setting my burden on a bench, I saddled Samuel’s horse and threw him on it. “Head West toward the canyon. I’ll catch up with you.” Before he could answer, I slapped his horse on its flank and headed back to the chaos.

A woman I didn’t know, tried to block ma’s path. A dangerous thing to do when she had Samantha with her. Leroy reached her before I did and wrapped her in his arms. “Esther, let the doctors do their jobs.”

Uncle Sky, shirtless, and packing a load of bandages, hobbled up with a crutch under his good arm. “Esther, this is out of your hands. I agree with Leroy.
Let the doctors do their work.” He turned toward me. “What are you doing here? I thought you left with Samuel.”

Before I could answer, Ma broke free and was in his face. “What are you doing out of bed?” Then she turned toward me. “Why aren’t you with Samuel trying to find Johanna?” She glared at us waiting for her answers.

I fought to keep from smiling. Uncle Sky and I stood over seven feet tall. I’m an inch or two taller than him. Ma was a pinion pine standing between two fully grown Redwoods. I spoke first. “I told Samuel where he would find Jo and promised to join him as quick as I could.”

“Seth has been shot twice. One of the bullets is close to the spine. He’s young and appears to be strong. Phillip is a surgeon, trained in Pennsylvania and his wife, Heather, is a good doctor. Seth's in good hands,” the strange woman said.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“I’m Breanna Sullivan, Caitlin be calling me ‘Nana.’” She held out her hand.

“Caitlin?”

“You be knowing her as Johanna.”

“Most of us call her ‘Jo.’ I shook her hand. Ma, Leroy, and Uncle Sky followed my lead.

Afterwards, she turned her attention toward me. “You said you knew where Jo is?" She closed her eyes for a moment.

“Yes Ma’am, I do.”

She stared at Ma. “They have the first bullet out. The second is being more difficult.”

“How do you know?..." Uncle Sky  intervened when he touched Ma on the shoulder.

“She knows, Esther. You can take my word. Would you help me back to bed?” Ma followed him and soon returned.

She smiled at Mrs. Sullivan. “Thank you.”

Jo's nana turned her attention to me. “Will yeh take me with you?”

Her question caught me off guard and I turned to Ma who nodded.

“Come with me, Breanna. You’ll need a change of clothing, if you're to ride a mule.”

Righter and his artist entered by means of the front door. “Maureen said there was a gunfight.”

“Your wife is correct. Johanna’s father and his gang tried to shoot up the place.  Matt, Sky and Seth were shot, along with a few others. He escaped and Johanna has gone after him.”  Ma nodded at a table. “Help yourself to the food. Plenty of fresh horses in the stables. Grab a couple and be ready to ride when Mrs. Sullivan and I come back. If you want to stay here, fine.” Ma left with her guest and went upstairs.

Righter looked at me. “My wife fed us. We'll go get the horses.”

“I’ll go with you. Don’t go near the mules, I'll handle them.”

Jo's Revenge

OLD FRIENDS/NEW ENEMIES
CHAPTER SEVEN
BRIGIT'S GIFTS PART FIVE
ARIZONA TERRITORY
May, 1884

 Narrated by Solomon Thompson
Ending of the last post:  Righter and his artist entered the front door. “Maureen said there was a gunfight.”

“Your wife is correct. Johanna’s father and his gang tried to shoot up the place.  Matt, Sky and Seth were hit, along with a few others. The bastard escaped and Jo went after him.”  Ma nodded at a table. “Help yourself to the food. Plenty of fresh horses in the stables. Grab a couple and be ready to ride when Mrs. Sullivan and I come back. If you want to stay here, fine.” Ma left with her guest and went upstairs.
***
Righter looked at me. “My wife fed us. We'll get the horses.”

“I’ll go with you. Don’t go near the mules, I'll handle them.”

We moved the saddled horses and mules to the hitching rails in front of the hotel. Rollins stayed behind to protect those left behind. Some of the lesser wounded joined us and helped themselves to the saddled horses.

“Sean'll not be coming back here. Jo's going to be busy getting her revenge. With the help of her Nana Kennedy, she has captured him. They be in a place surrounded by big rocks."

“That sounds like the place.” I increased my speed to a canter.

“If it’s a canyon, Milo should have no trouble finding it,” Ma directed her remarks to me.

"It’s a canyon, but the entrance doesn’t look like an entrance.” We rode on in silence.

Soon, I came across Samuel’s tracks. He's never been to the canyon, but I gave him good directions. He turned off and went to Seth and Uncle Sky’s lookout point where he could watch the going on in the canyon without anyone knowing he was there.

I stopped. “Ma, do you see that large rock?” I pointed to a large boulder the size of a medium size house.

“What about it? It’s just a big rock.” She scoffed.

Like most people she didn’t know what she was looking at.  I pointed to the ground. “Samuel missed the entrance and wandered off. I need to go find him.” I lied. “To the right of that big rock is a narrow trail leading into the canyon. It’s a bit tricky, but if you stay on it, you’ll find Jo and what is left of her father.”
I rode off after Samuel. His horse was tied a few feet from the look out.
“It’s about time you got here.” He complained as I knelt beside him.

His Winchester was close by. “Jo has shot her father to smithereens.”

My Sharpe was in my hands. I cocked and we watched the canyon together.

Jo was reloading her gun and her father was dotted with bullet holes. She appeared to be talking to herself, ignoring her father’s plea “No, I’m not finished with him, yet.” She fired at his knees and then at his groin. He laid on the ground moaning. Jo was interrupted by the sound of horses entering the canyon.

“Johanna, what are you doing?” Ma dismounted and ran to her.

To my surprise she fought Ma’s hug, “He killed my mother and tried to sell me to a whore house. It was his fault his brothers got a hold of me. Now he killed Seth.” She turned and Ma pushed Jo’s gun in the air, causing her shot to go astray.

“Quit this nonsense. Seth needs you.”

“Is he still alive?”

“The doctors are working on him. They already have one bullet out and they are working on the other one.”

Jo dropped her gun and returned Ma’s hug.

Something is wrong with the picture.  Where is Mrs. Sullivan?"

Just then, Mrs. Sullivan rode up, dismounted, and followed our tracks to our vantage point. “Brigit told me yeh be lying and directed me ta’ yeh?

“Who is Brigit?” Samuel asked.

“There’s no time for that. She be having a strong message for you two.  Kill that bastard before Caitlin does.”

“Who is Caitlin…?”  Samuel cocked his Winchester.

I interrupted him. “No time for answers. Let’s aim for head shots.” We both fired and Jo’s target’s head exploded.

“Brigit, send th’ remains of this bastard ta’ Hell.” Mrs. Sullivan crossed herself the way I’ve seen Catholics do.

“What the hell?" Samuel exclaimed. He and I couldn’t believe our eyes. The body of Jo’s shot-riddled father had disappeared, along with blood stains on the ground.

Samuel turned toward Mrs. Sullivan. “Who the hell are you?”

“Careful, Samuel. Even Ma made sure she was on the good side of this lady.” I shook my head to clear out the dust, just as Milo and his group entered the canyon.

“Yeh best make yerself scarce until I can calm th’ Marshall.” Mrs Sullivan mounted her mule like she had been riding one all of her life and left us.

“Do you feel like hiding?” Samuel asked me.

“No more than you do. I say we clean our rifles, throw away our spent cartridges and go see how Seth is doing. Uncle Milo will find us there.”

Samuel nodded his head. “I think between Ma and Mrs. Sullivan; Jo has all the protection she needs. I sure don’t want to be in Uncle Milo’s boots if he makes Ma, or Mrs. Sullivan angry.” Samuel began taking his rifle apart.

“He's used to Ma being upset with him, but Mrs. Sullivan is something else. He might find himself in Hell with Jo’s shot up father.” I started cleaning my Sharpe.

The ride back to Devil’s Fork was quiet as we pondered what we had seen and not being able to tell
anybody.

The doctor and his wife came from behind the curtain just as Samuel and I entered.

“How is Seth doing?” I asked.

 He just shook his head.

CHAPTER NINE
Milo meet his match
ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY 1887

From an earlier chapter: "Then you don't know Jo. She would never run from a gunfight except to get the son-of-a-bitch who shot her husband," Milo declared. "For all that are able, mount up. We need to stop Jo before she catches the bastard. May God have mercy on his soul if she does."

Ending of the last chapter:  Samuel nodded his head. “I think between Ma and Mrs. Sullivan; Jo has all the protection she needs. I sure don’t want to be in Uncle Milo’s boots if he makes Ma or Mrs. Sullivan angry.” Samuel began taking his rifle apart.

“He's used to Ma being upset with him, but Mrs. Sullivan is something else. He might find himself in Hell with Jo’s shot up father.” I started cleaning my Sharpe.

The ride back to Devil’s Fork was quiet as we pondered what we had seen and not being able to tell anybody.

The doctor and his wife came from behind the curtain just as Samuel and I entered.

“How is Seth doing?” I asked him.

 He just shook his head.
**

The posse was doomed to failure from the get-go. We had a clear trail and then a freak storm washed it away. Although we tried, we couldn’t find it again. On our return trip to Devil’s Fork, we heard gunfire from a thirty-eight; the type of gun Jo uses.

It had to be her, because the rapid rate of fire pointed to her. It took a while to pick up the trail of several horses and two mules. It ended at a very large boulder, but I found the tracks, again, on a very narrow trail. We had just started when two rifles sounded; one sounded like a Winchester and the other, a much heavier gun; a Sharpe rifle.

In our territory, I knew only three people who used such a powerful gun. I hadn’t taken mine from its holder. Another was Uncle Sky, who was wounded in the shootout and the other, my nephew, Solomon Thompson, who to the best of my knowledge, wasn’t involved in the gun play. He felt very close to Jo and Seth and acted as a big brother to both. By identifying Solomon, I knew his older brother, Samuel would be the one using the Winchester. Their target could be none other than Jo’s evil father.

As we entered the canyon, I received the shock of my life. Jo, in her gun fighting outfit, was crying in Esther’s arms. I recognized some of the men as being among the lightly wounded and unable to join my posse. The biggest shock was there was no evidence of Jo’s father being anywhere around. My aforementioned nephews were among the missing, also.

I glared at my younger sister. “What the Hell is going on?”

Esther released Jo, but kept her arms around her. “What do you think is going on, Milo?” Her glare and protective attitude toward Jo, warned me I best tread lightly.

I returned her look and demanded, “Where’s Samuel and Solomon?”

“Obviously, they not be here. Why are yeh looking for them?” A strange woman entered the canyon on a mule and rode right at me.

“We not be having a chance ta meet earlier. I’m Breanna Sullivan, Caitlin’s nanna from Pennsylvania.” She held her hand out to me.

Flabbergasted, I shook her hand. “Deputy United State Marshal, Milo Mathews, retired.”

"Ah, yes, yeh be in Cheyenne and helped me daughter, Heather, out of a wee bit of difficulty. I would like ta thank yeh.”

“You’re welcome, but I don’t remember seeing you there. On top of that, your daughter didn’t need my help. All I did was to bust up a mob and she took care of the rest. Where were you?”

“We passed each other as I be going ta hep an expectant mother. Earlier, I took over caring for the children while Joleen strolled into town ta take in the sights.”

“And now, you are here, riding a mule like you were born in the saddle.”

“The mule belongs ta Esther. It be having a gentle soul and be easy ta ride.”

“Lady, none of Esther's mules are easy to ride. You’re a greenhorn and riding one.”

“You asked about Samuel and Solomon.” Esther intervened.  “Samuel got himself lost and Solomon went looking for him.”

“Samuel got lost and Solomon went looking for him?”

“Samuel left to find Jo. Solomon gave him the directions to the canyon, but Samuel got mixed up and missed the entrance.”

“Lying don’t become you, Esther. You’re almost as easy to read as Jo.” I turned to Jo. “Did you catch up with your father?”

“He disappeared.” She looked at Mrs. Sullivan instead of Esther and a calmness came over her.

I stared at the three females for a moment before I concentrated on Jo. “Hand me your gun belt and purse gun.” Again, Jo looked at Mrs. Sullivan instead of Esther, who tried to intervene.

“Milo…”

“Stay out of it, Esther.” I cut her off sharply without taking my eyes off Jo.

I held out my hand and Jo gave me her small gun which she called, “Baby.”  I smelled the barrel. The small gun hadn’t been used. The cylinder held five unspent cartridges.

Jo nudged my left hand. She held out her gun belt with the thirty-eight in the holster.

I checked out the belt loops. All held a cartridge. The cylinder held five unspent shells. I wasn’t surprised when the barrel smelled cleaned and unused.  After I finished, I handed the gun belt back to her and watched as she put it on. She bent over and tied her holster to her leg. An idea came to me.

I eased a cartwheel from my pocket while she was busy tying the holster in place. When she finished, I threw the silver dollar as high as I could. “Flying dollar!”

Jo drew and fired. Nothing happened. I took the gun carefully out of her hands and smelled the barrel. The gun had been fired several times. I turned her around and most of her belt loops were empty.

I dismissed my posse and sent it back to Devil’s Fork.  After they left, I turned my attention to Esther and held up Jo's smokeless gun.. “Someone has a heap of explaining to do.”

"Seth?" Esther stared at me. "What happened to my son?" Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the weapon in her hands.

From Chapter Five: The sound of a galloping horse filled the room.

“Then you don’t know Jo. She’d never run from a gunfight except to get the
son-of-a-bitch who shot her husband,” Milo declared. “For all who are able, mount up. We need to stop Jo before she catches the bastard. May God have mercy on his soul if she does.”

End of the last chapter: Who is this ‘Brigit’ you and your mother mentioned?”

“Phillip is the only man I’m allowed to talk to about her.”

“Why?”

“She helps us when he has a difficult surgery. She was instrumental when Phillip operated on Seth.”

“Is she a doctor?”

“Not in the modern sense of the word.”

“How can she control Jo’s life.” I locked eyes with Heather. She didn’t blink, but stared right back at me.

“I can’t answer your question. Brigit relates to females only. She is an Irish Goddess.”

“A goddess? “What kind of malarkey are you throwing at me, now?”

“Brigit, show him his worst nightmare, please.”
**
I watched the Marshal’s face as Brigit showed us the same image; A burning house and fields with bodies lying on the ground in the front yard. His face turned pale as he reached for his gun.

“You won’t be needing that, Marshal. It’s just an image from deep in your mind. The fear of losing your family. This is a very rough land.”

He stared at me. “Who the Hell are you people?”

“I’m a Doctor of Medicine. My Mother is a mid-wife and Herbalist; Phillip is a licensed surgeon. Mother’s family practices Catholicism.  Phillip is newly associated to the Church.” The women in our family are protected by Brigit. She has chosen to aid Phillip in his work.

“You are all in league with the Devil.” The Marshal face turned red.

“Is that the way you wish to explain all that you have witness since you met us?”

“Do you deny you are in league with the Devil?” He took a step toward me. I could feel the heat of his anger and fear.

“Yes. We are all practicing Catholics. There is no evil in us.”

“The Hell there isn’t.” He turned and stomped out without another word.

I watched his retreating back until he was out of sight. Shaking my head, I returned to Jo and Seth.

Jo was holding his hand and stroking his sweat-matted hair with her other. She looked up at me. “Is he gonna’ live?”

I knelt beside her and embracing her, stroking her back. “Phillip and I will do our best. Release him, please.”  I turned my attention inward to Brigit. Help him to heal, please. Jo needs him.

A pink cloud covered his body.

I looked at the other women in the room. “Hold hands. Please, don’t release contact until I say so.” Brigit, please show us the plans you have for Jo and her husband.

Images began flowing through my mind to the others. I was holding Esther’s hand and clamped it tighter when she tried to remove it.

Slower please, Brigit. Esther relaxed as the images came at a slower pace, then stopped altogether. Thank you, Brigit. “Release hands.”

Esther was the first to speak. “What was that all about? Are you practicing Witchcraft?” She turned from me and tried to retain eye contact with Jo. I was surprised she didn’t expect me to answer.

“No, Mother, we are all practicing Catholics-although I haven’t practiced in several years.  Brigit and Nana Kennedy help us when we need them. They aren’t evil.” Jo hugged her Mother-in-law.

Jo’s touch calmed Esther. “Do they help you with your shooting ability?”

“No, that’s is a natural ability, as well as, my getting along with wild animals. Nana Kennedy helped me when I was locked up in the basement of the orphan home.”

“Locked up in an Orphanage?”

“I will tell you about it later, Mother. While Seth is resting, I would like us to show you, and Nana Sullivan our little town. Please come with us, Mother.”

I kissed Phillip and left him and Jolene to care for Seth and Sky.

We women left the building, following an anxious Jo and Esther.

“I understand Brigit helped Phillip and Heather when he operated on Seth.” Esther addressed her question to me as we strolled down the street toward the General Store.

“Brigit is from Ancient Ireland and is trying to learn our modern ways of medicine. She has taught me much of her ways. Phillip and I are trying to return the favor.”

As we approached the General Store, a man, obviously a farmer, and the store keeper was loading a wagon. A young boy was struggling to help, but dropped his load.

Then, the man erupted and picked something off of the wagon seat. “You’re worthless when it comes to men’s work!” He swung a whip at the fear-riddled boy.

The sound of a gunshot startled me. Jo held her gun and pointed it at the farmer. “You ain’t gonna whip this boy, again!” She fired at the whip lying on the ground, reached for a smaller gun hidden in her purse and continued firing. There wasn’t much left of the whip when she finished.

To my surprise, the farmer stood still while the store keeper ignored the bullets flying at the whip, set his arm load of supplies in the back of the wagon, then disappeared into his store. Jo loaded both of her guns before the farmer came to life.

“How dare you interfere with my correcting my son!” He threw the whip handle down and reached into his wagon.

“You pull that shotgun out and you’re a dead man.” Jo holstered her large gun and turned toward the boy. “What’s your name?”

“Rodney; Rodney Hornsby.

Jo ignored the farmer. “May I call you, ‘Rod’?”

“Yes, Ma’am.” He held out his hand.

Jo shook it with her left hand.

“Mister you’re about to make the dumbest move in your life.”
Milo had arrived without my seeing him. There was no fear in his eyes, but the fire increased.

Chapter 11
Jo To The Rescue: Part Two

OLD FRIENDS/NEW ENEMIES
CHAPTER ELEVEN
PART TWO
JO TO THE RESCUE
ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY 1887
NARRATED BY JO ROLLINS THOMPSON

“You pull that shotgun out, and you’re a dead man.” Jo holstered her large gun, turned her back on the farmer, and turned her attention toward the boy.

“What’s your name?”

“Rodney; Rodney Hornsby," he said through trembling lips.

“May I call you, ‘Rod’?” It appeared Jo completely ignored the farmer.

“Yes, Ma’am.” He smiled and held out his right hand.

Jo shook it with her left hand. “Would you like to come with me or stay with your father?”

“He's my step-father. I'll go with you,"  Rod said and embraced me.

“Mister, you’re about to make the dumbest move in your life.” Milo's voice was calm, but deadly.

He had arrived without my seeing him. There was no fear in his eyes; they emitted a murderous gleam as he pulled his gun.
**
“Milo, it’s not fair you having all the fun.” Uncle Sky, a bit shaky on his legs, leaned against the porch post for support. The Sharpe Rifle looked like a toy in his massive hands.

“Sky what do you think you are doing? You’re supposed to be in bed. Your wounds could start bleeding, again.” Mother hurried over to his seven-foot-plus frame. She snatched the rifle from his trembling hands, looked at Samuel and Solomon, who had just exited the hotel. “Put him back in bed and make sure his stays there!”

Mother looked like a little child scolding her father. There wasn’t a man facing her who willingly dared to encounter her wrath.

“Now Esther, I was shot three days ago. It’s time I be getting up and about my business.” Uncle Sky tried to stand taller, but failed.

“You Thompsons are all too damned hard headed for your own good. Do I have to get Samantha to persuade you to stay in bed?”

Sky blanched when Mother mentioned her sawed-off Greener shotgun.

Solomon came to his aid and put his arm under Uncle Sky’s good arm and tried to lead him back inside the hotel. Sky protested and tried to free himself.

“I’m the only one big enough to put you over my shoulder.” Solomon appeared to be a few inches taller than Uncle Sky. “I ain’t hankering for Ma to get mad at me.”

“Put your pride away and go with him, Sky.” Mother came up to a little above his waist, but she didn’t back down. “I might have Samuel nurse you if you don’t behave. He won’t hesitate tying you to the bed.”

Sky gave Mother an evil eye and let his nephew lead him back into the hotel. Mother followed close behind.

“You wouldn’t shoot an unarmed man, would you?”

The farmer’s voice brought me back to what was happening in the street. He was standing well clear of the shotgun under the wagon’s seat.

“It’s been known to happen.” Milo shifted his weight, holstered his .44 and stared at the farmer.

I knew he was thinking about the crazy boy who killed his parents. Milo shot the unarmed boy in the back of his head.

The farmer nodded at me. “She destroyed my whip, making it impossible for me to guide my horses.” He stared at Uncle Milo.

“Saul,” Uncle Milo spoke to the store keeper. “Go get a whip and charge it to Jo and Seth’s account. Then he pointed to the shot up whip and spoke to the farmer, “Clean up your mess and carry it with you.”

“Why should I? She's the one who caused it. Children shouldn’t be playing with guns.” He tried to bluff Uncle Milo by staring him down. He lost all interest when he stared at the forty-four pointing at his belly button.

I barely caught sight of my Uncle’s drawing it.

“Mister the only reason I haven’t shot you is I don’t want to rile Jo. Samuel, do the honors and throw three Cartwheels in the air as high as you can.” He didn’t take his eyes off the farmer.

I took the leather loop off my gun and waited for Samuel to yell out.

“Flying dollars,” his yell filled the air.

I drew my guns; Baby, my short-gun was tucked in the back of my pants’ waist. I used the big thirty-eight to hit the first two and Baby to hit the last one.

“Pick up those dollars and take a good look at them,” Uncle Milo ordered the farmer, cocking his forty-four. “Jo, are any of your pets in town?”

“Toby is in the cage behind the smaller hotel.”

“Would you call him, please? Knowing you, the cage is unlocked.”

My shrilled whistle got results. Toby trotted down the street to my side. He placed his paws on my shoulder and took a piece of Pelican from my shirt pocket. I hugged him and motioned for him to get down.

“Now, Mister do you know who you just called a child?”

“The Bob-Cat Girl!” He barely whispered.

“Jo are you holding any grudges against him?” I glanced at the storekeeper who offered the new whip to the farmer. “If he tries to whip Rod. I’ll be aiming at him and not the whip.”

Uncle Milo stared at the farmer. “There ain’t a man here who would try and stop her. Samuel, There’s only one farm around here that could be mistaken for a deserted farm and it belongs to Uncle Sky’s wife.”  He handed a badge to his nephew.  “If you have to shoot the bastard, this will make it legal. I don’t want any more hidden bodies in my jurisdiction.”

“Do you have a badge for me, Uncle Milo?” Solomon returned from his task.

Milo handed Solomon a badge. “That goes double for you, Shorty. I know you had a hand in killing Jo’s father.”

Thus, my brother-in-law, Solomon, received a new name.

We watched as the farmer and the two deputies leave town. Rod tugged at my shirt’s sleeve.

“Miss Jo, he has my sister tied up in his bedroom.”

“Do you know how to ride, Rod?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Let’s get my horse. You climb up behind me and hold on tight.”

We ran for the livery behind the new hotel. Toby ran right alongside of me.

Chapter 14
Up Pop The Devil

By c_lucas

Nana Kennedy enter my body and noticed Melanie, fully covered, tied to the travois by her wrists and ankles. "Samuel didn't want to take her. He said she wanted to stay." I told Aunt Heather, who just nodded her head at my comment

Aunt Heather mounted her mule. "She doesn't know what she wants. I need a quiet place to work with her. Would you take us to your canyon?"

"Yes ma'am, I will." I led the way with my aunt riding by my side. Why would she want to go to Seth's and my canyon? It's far from peaceful. Three men have died there by my hands.
**
It was a two hour ride from Uncle Sky's second farm to Seth and my canyon. Melanie slept the whole way. I looked at Aunt Heather. She had a calm, but determine look on her face.

"Is there something wrong, Aunt Heather?" I asked.

She smiled at me and shook her head. "Sometimes I wonder what Brigit plans are. I know what she wants from me, but I don't know what she wants from you."

"Why should she wants anything from me?"

"That's why we are here; to find out."

Aunt Heather entered the canyon and rode to the spot where I had killed my two uncles. She turned and looked at me. "I can think of no two demons who deserved the fate of the death you gave them. They still control you because you allow them to. Beckon them now and I'll show you how to rid yourself of them."

"How do I do that.?" I asked as my fear became stronger.

"As you usually do. Think about them and they will come. Be prepared for Brigit response. You will be rid of them and have peace.

I began to tremble as I felt their presence and dropped to my knees. I felt the whip and cigar burns. Then a strong presence made itself known. The fear left me and I could no longer feel my uncles' torment.

Brigit has offered you her healing. Your uncles will not bother you anymore. Don't be afraid of the image she sends you.

I felt strong heat. It was hotter than I have ever felt. Suddenly I felt an immense coolness and a strong sense of peace. The canyon changed into a place of beauty. Large green trees and plants were everywhere. The stream turned into a pond and flowers bloomed everywhere.

The last image was of Seth lying in bed. He smiled at me. I felt complete and rushed to him. His image disappeared and Nana stood where Seth had been.

"Yeh know yeh cannot touch an image. What yeh saw was an image of your husband. Seth is healing, but he has a long path in front of him. Yeh need to grow stronger. Cailin."

Nana disappeared and I turned toward Aunt Heather. She had a glow of light around her. "The next image will be the strongest of all. You know you are well protected." The image of my father stood between me and Aunt Heather.

I saw him as the evil man in my dreams. He killed my mother and tried to sell me to whore house. The woman didn't want me. She ordered a large man to throw us out. Once my father carried me out, he threw me down the steps, stabbed the big man and set the back of the house on fire. I fled with my clothes in my hand and wrapped only in a bedsheet. My father ran in another direction.

I stared at him and reached for my gun. I couldn't draw because my gun was too heavy.

"You don't need your gun. Use the power around you and get rid of him. Free your mind." The light around Aunt Heather grew brighter.

My thoughts centered around how I had removed my uncles from my mind. The intense heat surrounded my father, who started to scream. The image and the light around Aunt Heather faded. I had no fear of my father. I felt free.

I smiled at my Aunt. "Thank you."

"You're welcome. Now for your greatest match." She glanced at the sleeping Melanie and waved her right hand. The ropes and the travois vanished.

Melanie, naked as before, picked up a fist-sized rock and charged me, screaming filthy words at the top of her voice.

“As you usually do. Think about them and they will come. Be prepared for Brigit's response. You will be rid of them and have peace.

I began to tremble as I felt their presence and dropped to my knees. I felt the whip and cigar burns. Then a strong presence made itself known. The fear left me and I could no longer feel my uncles’ torment.

Brigit has offered you her healing. Your uncles will not bother you anymore. Don’t be afraid of the image she sends you.

“Yeh know yeh cannot touch an image. What yeh saw was an image of your husband.  Seth is healing, but he has a long path in front of him. Yeh need to grow stronger, Cailin.”

Nana disappeared and I turned toward Aunt Heather. She had a glow of light around her. “The next image will be the strongest of all. You know you are well protected.” The image of my father stood between me and Aunt Heather.

I saw him as the evil man in my dreams. He killed my mother and tried to sell me to a whore house. The woman didn’t want me. She ordered a large man to throw us out. Once my father carried me out, he threw me down the steps, stabbed the big man, and set the back of the house on fire. I fled with my clothes in my hand and wrapped only in a bed sheet. My father ran in another direction.

I stared at him and reached for my gun. I couldn’t draw because my gun was too heavy.

“You don’t need your gun. Use the power around you and get rid of him. Free your mind.” The light around Aunt Heather grew brighter.

My thoughts centered around how I had removed my uncles from my mind. The intense heat surrounded my father, who started to scream. The image and the light around Aunt Heather faded. I had no fear of my father. I felt free.

I smiled at my Aunt. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Now for your greatest match.” She glanced at the sleeping Melanie and waved her right hand. The ropes and the travois vanished.

Melanie, naked as before, picked up a fist-sized rock and charged me, screaming filthy words at the top of her voice.

Chapter 15
Up Popped the Devil, Part Two

Up Popped the Devil
PART TWO
NARRATED BY JO THOMPSON

Ending of the last chapter: “You don’t need your gun. Use the power which surrounds you and rid yourself of him. Free your mind.” The light around Aunt Heather grew brighter.

My thoughts centered around how I had removed my uncles from my mind. Intense heat surrounded my father, who started screaming.

**
I grabbed a large rock. Melanie hauled back to throw hers, but I threw mine first. It connected with hers when she released it. Both rocks flew above her head.

I wasted no time in racing to Melanie and tackling her. She was taller than I, but the force of my speed knocked her to the ground. I released her, rolled off of her and grabbed a smaller rock. She screamed and backed away when I stuck her head a glancing blow without losing my rock. I dropped it and picked up a heavy stick.

Melanie, her hand on her bleeding head, tried to get away from me. Thoughts of my only other fight with a crazy girl, Scorpio, filled my mind. I swung my stick and connected with Melanie’s left knee.  More curse words flowed from her mouth as she fell. I stood back and watched. My stick at the ready. Melanie held her knee and rolled on the ground. Her eyes glowed red with anger and her profanity increased.

I touched her with my stick. “Do you want to calm down, or should I beat you with this?”

She glared at me and grabbed a large rock. My stick connected with her elbow and she dropped her rock. Melanie held her injured arm with her good hand. She glared at me and cursed.

I touched her good arm with my stick. “Shut your filthy mouth, or I’ll give you something to scream about.” Her silence was deafening.

The pink cloud covered her. It withdrew, dragging some kind of creature with it. The cloud disappeared, leaving its captured demon lying at Aunt Heather's feet. The girl fainted.

My aunt pointed her right hand toward the creature. “In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, be gone!” She pointed to the ground and a hole appeared and swallowed the creature. She nodded at Melanie. “She's free of her demon.” With a wave of her hand, the unconscious girl was tied onto the travois, clothed in a long white dress.

I stared at my aunt, not knowing what to do.

Aunt Heather opened her arms and I ran into them. We held each other in a tight embrace. She released me first and I slowly release her. “Be still and watch.” My nana Kennedy appeared before me. Aunt Heather stood beside her.

The pink cloud covered them and I felt drawn into it. Then the cloud grew brighter and I began trembling. A short stocky woman joined hands with my aunt and nana. They were on either side of the woman. Aunt Heather reached out and placed her right hand on my head.
“Know that we will be with you always. You can talk to us with your mind and we will answer.”

“What about Seth?” An image flashed in my mind. Seth was lying on his bed with his eyes closed.

“Hug him in your mind and see him hugging you,” Aunt Heather said. “Be careful; he is still healing.”

A flood of love filled my heart when I followed her instructions and found I could hug him back. It felt so real.

Aunt Heather touched my shoulder and the image disappeared. She smiled at me as we mounted. My aunt said some words softly, “Brigit, if you would.”

A strong wind blew over us and the next thing I knew, my aunt and I were just outside of Devil’s Fork. She waved her hand; Melanie was free from the travois, dressed similarly like me.

Melanie held out her hand, and I pulled her onto Cricket, who whinnied and trotted toward town.

Aunt Heather rode at my side. It was time to visit my husband and Uncle Sky.
