"An April shower of Poems"

Chapter 1
Whimsical and Random

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Whimsical Idea and Random Thought
were chatting one day
Whimsical said, "I'll act on a whim,
I'll be the wind, I'll blow you away."

Random replied, "You'll find that's not easy,
my flighty friend,
I'm here for the long-haul
I'm here to the end."

"You may think I've no mission
Haphazard my style
But I grant you, I intend
to be here awhile."

"So, come, let's join together
A muse-team we'll make.
By combining your ideas, and my thoughts,
one Happy Poet we're sure to create."

So Whimsical and Random opened a door
And that's how Carolyn became notesandmore

Author Notes Thanks to pattigirl for this great picture of two friends talking, I guess they are forming the muse-team.

Debbie aka dejohnsrld, has challenged a poem a day for April, so here goes number 1.

Chapter 2
Signs of Spring

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

April showers warm and sweet
fall upon the rooted feet
of lively oaks and maples tall
and feed the streams
both great and small

Showers awaken vast meadows fair
wild flowers blooming every where
robins hop and sing with cheer
Spring is here
Spring is here

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Author Notes Day 2 of a poem a day challenge by my friend Debbie aka djohnsrld for National Poem Month

Thanks to tellust from fanart for this great shot of Robin singing.

Chapter 3
Soul Poetry

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

I try to write 'deep' poetry
And sometimes I succeed
Other times just lite and sweet
Are all I really need

Self-expression pure and kind
Whether sonnet, nonet or prose
I find that when I write with Soul
my poetic cup o'er flows

Chapter 4
Pollination

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Pollination au'natural
Overall distribution
Lovingly delivered by bees, wasp and such
Luxuriant acceptance
Into the bosom of the bloom
Natures in vitro
As buds open with gladness
Transcending all imagination
Intrinsically beautiful
Opulent production
Nectar of Spring

Author Notes Thanks to WendyG from fanart for the fabulous honey bees in action.
Pollination is a necessary process in the reproduction of healthy flowering plants. From the Almond tree to Petunias, from Roses to Zucchini, each must be pollinated 'sperm meeting egg' so to speak to carry on the species. Hummingbirds, bees, wasp and spiders are invaluable in the natural realm of agriculture to assure future growth. 'Love makes the world go round.'

The promise

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Mountains clothed in fine white mist
Waiting for the Sun
Beams of brightness fog will lift
April day has just begun

Rain-drenched rainbows
Brilliantly arched over
Horizon's sparkling hue
Embraces April day

.......................

Chapter 10
Double digit Kid

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

With an excited heart
we anticipated the birth
of our long awaited
grandson

Born small but all
there
That's what counts
ten fingers, ten toes
perfect eyes, ears and nose

Came out squalling
right on cue
the nurse placed you in my arms
God is good, I fell in love
with you

Your Mom and Dad named you Kohlton
what a great little man
energetic and smart
like Papa Larry and your Dad
creative with your hands

Lego's are no challenge
to your architectural mind
you dis-assemble and re-assemble
projects, oh so fine

A great fisherman, you are sure to be
when your Dad catches one
you always manage
to hook at least three

You're a big brother to Faith
and younger brother to Sean
a wonderful helper and buddy
to your adoring Mom

A writer and artist, so much you can do
a kick-boxing award was presented to you
GeGe's proud of you and applaud all you did
Happy tenth birthday, Kohlton, my 'double digit' kid

Author Notes Hi, meet Kohlton, he turned ten April 9, he is sweet, loving, very energetic and a 'hoot' to be around. I love him dearly, he calls me GeGe.. Someday he will probably call me Grandma. Then I will probably cry, at least for awhile. Thank God for grandchildren. :-) Carolyn

Chapter 11
R U A Gardener

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

R U A Gardner
or just someone who loves to play outside?
Either way it is time you heard the lesson
I learned not so many years ago.

I used to shape my foliage
just anytime I pleased
The roses cut, the bushes trimmed
and pruned up all my trees

Sometimes they would look 'puny'
As if I'd done them wrong
No amount of apologies
Could mend them , not even my cheerful song

Sometimes my horticultural thumb
was not as green as it could be
My plants would wilt, not bloom a bit
shame on me, for all the world to see

Then I decided to avail myself
of information that was near
I visited the 'farmer in the dell'
Who said, "pay attention now and hear."

"If you want to trim your bushes and
cut up all your trees
Here's the months to do it in,
Sit right down and listen please."

"If a month ain't got no R, then let it be
'Cause if you cut,
you're shore to harm,
that bush or mighty tree

Use that ax in January, February,
March, April or September
And its good to trim in October
November, or December

In May, June, July and August
Don't you prune a living thing
Trim in fall or not at all
Or you can wait 'til Spring."

So now my plants are lush and green
I know just when to trim
While tending garden and my yard
I gladly give all praise to Him

Author Notes Thanks to M. Celeste for the wonderful Gardener's Chair picture. I love it.
If you start the practice of trimming only in the months bearing R's you will be amazed at the difference it will make in your over-all plant life. I hope you enjoy this, for the 'most part', it is a true poem.

Chapter 12
Traveling Thoughts

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Traveling Thoughts

Stars are hanging in Southern sky
As miles slip by

Moon races along-side highway
As if to say
Catch me if you can

Clouds flirt with stars and moon
Rain showers soon

Sun busy other side of world
Watching day unfurl
Flowers blossom in it's warmth

Son's family home in Tennessee
Welcome arms awaiting me

Author Notes tecayep, thank you for this great picture.

Larry and I are now in Tennessee for the weekend. Traveled down to visit with son and his family. It was an absolutely perfect Spring night, delightful for travel. I hope you enjoy reading Day 12, 18 more to go. :-) Carolyn

Chapter 15
Fallen Hero

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

On April 14, 2014 my Father-in-law passed away. Larry's Dad
had been married to my mother-in-law Juanita, for almost 70 years.
He was a World War II Veteran.

Hero fell today
Verlin Stephens ninety-three
Known to all as Pop

Author Notes Larry and I are in route to Phoenix , AZ. I hope to continue posting and will indeed have 30 poems by the end of April. I have written a couple in advance, The next few days will be very busy ones. Thank you all in advance for your prayers and kind thoughts at this sad but eventual time in our life. Carolyn

Chapter 16
He arose

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Spring arrived in Jerusalem

Jesus shared supper in upper room

'Remember me was the message He gave'

He went to the cross, our souls to save

Death could not keep Him in the grave

HE AROSE

Author Notes The New Testament instructs us to remember the Lords death, burial and resurrection every first day of the week. We do that by partaking of the emblems he gave. The unleavened bread, which represents His body on the cross, and the fruit of the vine, grape juice, which represents His blood shed for our sins. I write this to remind us of His willing sacrifice on our behalf. The 'Christian' world thinks of this time, one time per year, when in truth we are to celebrate that event every Sunday. I hope you can relate to the simplicity of this short poem.

Chapter 17
Maximize the Memories

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Minimize the Mountains
Maximize the Memories

Shun the Sin
Seek the Spiritual

Forget the Forgiven
Forgive the Fearful

Castoff the Cynical
Celebrate the Cherished

Ditch the Devious
Desire the Divine

Lose the Lethargy
Love the Lord

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Author Notes Sometimes, we forget, that our perception can influence our day, from the moment we first open our eyes. :-) Carolyn

Chapter 18
Shooting star

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

***************************

Panoply Delight

Shooting Star

Hurls through cobalt sky

***************************

Author Notes Thank you to Kenneth Dinkel for the wonderful abstract, Shooting Star.

And yet another form for National Poetry Month, it is called
a Lune, 3 lines, 5 syllables first and third line, 3 syllables second line.

Chapter 19
The Educated Armadillo

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

No Armadillo by the side
of the road
Just an old crow
and a couple of toads

Armadillo smartened
as the years went by
Stay off the road
If you don't want to die

Stay off the road
if you don't want to die

Author Notes This is the cutest Armadillo, thanks to Doris1022 for the delightful picture.

Chapter 20
Hunting Easter eggs

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

A hundred and six eggs all lined up in a row
some are pink and blue and some of them glow
all are brightly colored with prizes inside
waiting for the bunny to take them for a ride

He'll hide them in the grass, by a rock or a tree
Easily found by ages two or three
For the big boys and girls ages four, five and six
He will hide them carefully under leaves and sticks

Boys and girls with their baskets, laughing as they run
under the blue sky and through the golden sun
Searching for the eggs that the Easter bunny hid
Parents watch with memories of when they were kids

Picking up eggs and wishing for some more
What a happy day, what fun to explore
all the little places where Easter eggs hide
what fun hunting for eggs with a friend by your side

Author Notes Thanks to fanart and Ambiance Studios for this wonderful picture.

Chapter 21
Just do it

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Join the Optimist club
Unify to create smiles
So far you are doing well
Think happy thoughts

Don't bother with the negative
Obsess on laughter

I'll join you in this quest
To be an Optimist

Author Notes Thanks hp13pup for this darling picture.

Chapter 22
Grandma's dream

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Grandma's dream

in her arms today

Newborn child

Author Notes Thanks to fanart for this stunning picture of a Grandma and new grandchild.

Thanks for reading this series, only 8 more to go.

Chapter 23
Farmers Field

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Plow and dig and break the ground
Planting time is coming round
Alfalfa, corn and beans abound
To meet the needs of Farmer Brown

Yellow haze on rapeseed field
Tons of rapeseed oil will yield
When harvest time and combine wield
Financial drought will be repealed

Rain come down so sweet and pure
Water fields and growth assure
But blights and pest this year detour
Let blessings fall and faith endure

Thanksgiving for his crops assure

Author Notes Many thanks to susanlen for this fine picture of a Rapeseed field.

Rapeseed is grown in many countries, however mainly in Europe. It is commonly known as Canola. It is also very much like the mustard plant. Many countries are using the oil, not only in edible forms but as the primary ingredient in bio-diesel. Additionally the bi-product that is left after pressing serves as high protein cattle feed. This information is available on the Internet, if you would care to learn more about the growing of Rapeseed. :-) Carolyn

Chapter 24
Storm Clouds

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

storm clouds hover over the lake
stillness so thick you can feel it

waiting for the first drop of rain
to caress the leaves of the trees
like the welcome touch of a tender lover

wind kicks up, raindrops are driven
harsh and slicing into the early foliage
of springs delicate attire

calm now the storm has passed
the sky returns to an azure blue
flowers sway, birds shake droplets from feathers
God is in His heaven, all's well with the world

Author Notes Thanks to fanart for this awesome picture of a stormy day.

Chapter 25
In the Hollow of Thy Hand

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

In the hollow of Thy hand
There is gentleness and rest

Thy hand covers me as a hen
would cover her chicks
to protect them from the storm
and perils of this life

Thy hand is there to raise me up
It steadies me when I am shaken
by the weight of the world
it lightens my load, it guides me
Thy hand is the mouth of Wisdom
Casting its shadow, shading my weary soul
In the hollow of Thy Hand
There is gentleness and rest

Author Notes Thanks to Moonwillow for the use of Green River Falls.
This poem starts with two lines and doubles, four lines then eight line. Sometimes I write in a form that if I were a Psalmist I would employ.

And dear readers, only five more poems to go in this commitment to a poem a day for National Poetry Month.

Chapter 26
Perpetual wind

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Perpetual wind
Blows through the heart of Kansas
Heir-conditions soul

Author Notes On our way back home we drove through the State of Kansas. The wind never stops blowing, but continues day and night. It has a soft whistling sound which is said to have driven pioneer women nearly insane. I thought of a positive way to view this act of nature.(Heir sounds like air) ( Only 4 left to go. Smile..Carolyn

Chapter 27
Waste not your time

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Waste not your time
On being unkind
with immaturity
in the forefront
of each decision

Waste not your time
on trying to be right
but rather
dwell more on
what is right

Waste not your time
life is too short
when compared to
eternity
which knows no end

Time, sweet time

In Eternity
you can't waste it
you can't save it
and, you can't spend it
Time is not of the essence
Eternity is forever

Author Notes I took this shot from the car window as we were driving through New Mexico. Those stalwart mountains remind me of eternity. Only three more poems to go. Thanks again for following this journey through National Poetry Month. :-) Carolyn

Chapter 28
Sail me away

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Sail me away
beyond the blue
where peace awaits my
tired and weary soul
Leave me not to float
aimlessly about
on the open seas
but guide me gently
and safely
to that shore

I'll walk the beach
following foot prints
in the sand
until I can make my way
alone in this foreign land

Oh! Can it be
loved ones are awaiting me
Running eagerly to greet
my now 'happy' soul
Weary, and alone no more
I'll walk with my Lord
On foreverlands
peaceful shore

Author Notes Thanks to Lena Ayer Kittrell for the wonderful picture of Sailboats.
use of minimal punctuation intended
Friends, we are on the count down. Only two poems left to go. I appreciate all the wonderful support and encouragement you have given me on this journey through the month of April. National Poetry Month. Thanks for reading. :-) Carolyn

Chapter 29
Throw out the ball

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

The crack of the bat
the roar of the crowd
peanuts and popcorn
vendors shouting out loud
and then there is John
a loyal Yankees fan
He's also a writer
And a great family man

Baseball he knows
and knows it quite well
Each season he writes
some great story he'll tell
About Yankees and Cardinals
Spring training and more
Who will win
the World Series this year,
'Yankees for sure.'

But John, that can't happen
What then would we do
The Cards can't give
the World Series to you
Let's meet at the stadium
As the first ball is pitched out
cheer, have a root-beer
that's what baseball's all about
Win or lose, it's a wonderful game
And, John, if I had my way
it's you... who would be
in Fanstorian Friendship's
great 'Hall of Fame'

Author Notes Picture is from Photobucket.
Well friends, I am working on a finale... Thanks to John, AKA jmdg1954 for providing the inspiration for this 29th poem. His encouraging comments, loyal support, and humorous remarks throughout the year has been a great blessing to me. Go Yankees, Go Cards. And whoever that fellow is in the picture, he has on the wrong baseball cap.. LOL :-) Carolyn

Chapter 30
Celebration of Life

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

It is a fitting way
to end this challenge
of writing a poem a day
this glorious month ends
and another begins
tomorrow

Each day as I write
and wonder
Think of subjects as I
Ponder
My heart is filled with
gratitude as all subjects
are within my reach
for we are blessed
with Freedom of speech

Poetry is a way
of letting your being
flow onto paper and
out to the far corners
of the world
It means I should write
responsibly, express
my inner feelings
always keeping in mind
the feelings of others

It could be short form
Only five, seven and five
Syllables to read

Written with soul
that may be all you need

Poetry is a way to
share love and concern
couplet's and quatrain's to write
Many other forms to learn

I could write a newspaper
to wrap up this great month
Of poetry written for you
however, May is upon us
there's still much to do

Write.... write, from your heart
let it flow
Create a legacy of words
as through life you go

Thanks for reading each day
and for all your support
National Poetry Months over
but there's still much to say
For once April opened
That God given, poetic door
There was no stopping
Carolyn, AKA notesandmore

Author Notes Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful support and encouragement as 'we' went through this month. National Poetry Month.

Chapter 31
Movin' On

By Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

April has ended and for many writers, including myself, it has proven to be quite a challenge.

I am known as Notesandmore on Fanstory, but in reality my writng name is Carolyn Deaton Stephens.

As the ninth in a family of ten children, it would have been easy for me to 'get lost in the shuffle,' so to speak. But you know, my parents didn't let that happen. They encouraged my poetic imagination, my writing skills, my artistic ability and my insatiable need to talk. Communication, articulate expression and the use of a well developed vocabulary was always applauded. I read everything in sight, from the time I could hold a book. Not only did my parents find it was a great method of learning, but it kept me occupied. Since there were so many other kids in the house, they told me later it was always a good thing, they knew where I would be, sitting in the rocking chair, rockin' and readin'.

I was fourteen when we got our first television. Black and white, full True-tone, wood cabinet, console. We were movin' on up. I proved to be multi-tasked for sure. I could rock, read, write a poem, if one was brewing, and never miss a beat of Tarzan of the Apes. And, I mean the 'real' Tarzan, with Johnny Weismuller. Now, young ladies, that man had muscle.

I say all that, to say this. Support and encouragement is a wonderful thing. It created a sense of balance and acceptance in my life when received from my parents, and yes, from my brothers and sisters also. Looking back, they were
always very tolerant of my quirkiness, were quick to return my smiles, and spurred me on to be a high achiever.

Likewise, you, my Fanstorian friends, have done the same. You have followed this series of poems for the National Poetry Month, with genuine interest, wonderful support and great encouragement. You spurred me on. You gave me inspiration to run the race, and to keep my commitment to write a poem a day.

As of the writing of this short story, twenty-six of thirty poems have reached recognized status, with four reaching all-time best. I have not counted all the shiny six-star awards. They are many. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Look what we did. Together. We have celebrated poetry, we have shared in a successful adventure.

And in the mighty words of the infamous, Tiny Tim:
"God Bless us, everyone."

Author Notes Photo taken while on a journey a couple of years ago. Somewhere out there. I am not sure which state, but unless the Lord comes first, or it falls down, I will be able to see it again when we return West. Thanks for reading, Carolyn
