Organ donation--miracle gift of life.
Author Notes |
Thank you shelley kay for organizing this contest.
Thank you Linky de Bruyn for sharing your perfect artwork entitled "Miracle of Life". The rule for this contest was to write a story that reflects a moment on / of YOUR life in only six words. My son, Kellen, was 19 years old when he became the recipient of a kidney transplant. His kidney disease, focal segmental glomulosclerosis, caused his kidneys to fail and he ended up having to go through dialysis. The miracle of his transplant gave him a second chance to live. A couple of facts for living donors: The human body only needs one kidney to function perfectly, the donor never has to pay for any of the tests or the surgery, the surgery is laparoscopic so no huge incision or scar, and if the donor is ever in need of a kidney transplant, they never have to be placed on a list--they will always be #1. A living donor usually goes home from the hospital in 1-2 days, and they return to work in 2-3 weeks. According to the National Kidney Foundation, in 2006, about 17,000 people received transplants--but there were over 70,000 people waiting as of April 2007. The article states that EVERY DAY ten people die waiting for a kidney. Please consider being an organ donor. Let your family know your wishes. It's truly a miracle and a gift of life. Thank you so much for reading! Indy :>) |

Happiness cannot be defined by numbers.
Author Notes |
If I may have your attention for a few moments:
Years ago, when my husband and I were building - by ourselves - our one and only "dream" home, a rather inquisitive and obnoxious neighbor stopped by and asked me how many fireplaces our home contained. Fireplaces? I responded, "Two." She quickly informed me that hers had four. I must say that I thought not only her question but her response odd. Who would care about the number of fireplaces in one's home? Why would anyone have four? Would my home be lovelier with four fireplaces? Would I be happier with four fireplaces? And why in the world was I bothered by her question? I recently saw her at a gas station, (she was with her third husband), and I remembered that conversation when she asked me if my husband and I were still living in the "old" neighborhood. (Apparently, she had moved on.) But then I started to think about how ridiculously infatuated our society is when it comes to numbers: cars, homes, clothing sizes, degrees, weight, televisions, partners, spouses, businesses, awards, vacations, boats, cell phones, passwords, stars etc. The list is infinite. Our lives truly are often painfully defined/relegated/measured in terms of numbers... So it goes. That's all I've got...for now. But it does make me wonder... Fondly Yours, diane kenel-truelove (A 55 year old, 1 husband, 2 kids, 2 cats, 1 home, size 12 - if I suck it in on good days, 2 fireplaces kind of gal...) |

We play the cards we're dealt!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Author Notes |
In life, like poker, we are all dealt different sets of cards...different hands...that's just the way it is. We do the best we can with the hands we're dealt.
If you want to win, developing a good 'poker face' is sound strategy. Not revealing what you have, or what you know, will help immensely, especially if you are bluffing or sandbagging. From Kenny Roger's song..."The Gambler" Every gambler knows That the secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away And knowin' what to keep 'Cause every hand's a winner And every hand's a loser And the best that you can hope for Is to die in your sleep |
Author Note: | True Story that happened to me |
Driver barely injured,
couldn't resuscitate car.
Author Notes |
I was in a single car accident about four years ago that was caused because I was distracted by a hornet in the car. One tiny second was all it took for my car to go off the road. Suddenly there was a tree right in front of me and there was no way I could stop and avoid it. I remember being slumped over the airbag and hurting. All the damage was on the passenger's side of the car. I was so elated I was the only one in the car and there was no one on the sidewalk. The tree was in someone's private residence and I was relieved no one was in the front yard.
Although I was hurting I was able to get out of the car on my own with a little assistance. In most cases it's better to stay where you are and not move, but the car started smoking and the onlookers thought I would be safer out of the car. Paramedics told me if I hadn't been wearing my seatbelt, I might have gone through the windshied. I am so grateful for the seatbelt and the airbag. My injuries consisted of : a very tender rope burn from the seatbelt, a huge bruise on my breast bone and a sore neck. Para-medics were concerned I might have a broken neck, but X-rays showed there were no broken bones anywhere. My poor car suffered severe damage and could not be resusitated. I'm glad it wasn't the other way around. The image I included with the story are the real remains of what used to be my car. The circumfrence of the tree was about eight inches and was cracked. The owners had to remove it. I was driving the legal limit of 35mph and am very happy to be alive. Since that time I double check the car before I get in. I solidly reccomend wearing your seat belt. I was only a mile from home when the accident took place. Please be careful when you drive, danger is closer than you think, God be with you, Helvi :o) |
I believe in life’s tiny miracles.
Author Notes |
The organizer of this contest is shelley kay--thank you! One of her requests in this six word story collection is--"write a six word story about me".
I few days ago, I received a PM from a member who had read my bio and wrote a note of thanks for being a NICU nurse and taking care of preemies. Her daughter was born premature and wanted to let me know how much she appreciated the nurses who care for tiny people. I told her that it's more than a job to me--it's my passion. It's also so much of who and what I am. So, to write a six word story about me, has to be about the tiny miracles who constantly show me what it is to be a fighter ... and teach me every day to believe in miracles. Thanks for reading! I have suffered from anxiety my entire life. I endure by taking meds and visiting a psychiatrist. I know this pain well.
When I was seeking disability, my lawyer told me about another client of hers. The other client also suffered from anxiety. When asked where she would rate her anxiety, she said, "I would rather have Cancer." It really does affect you a lot more than most people think. If this sentence makes one more person aware of how devastating Anxiety can be, you won't be able to erase my smile. :o) Thank you so much for stopping to read Helvi:o) |
Author Note: | see notes about me playing Santa |
Santa likes milk and cookies, too!
~*~
Author Notes |
Contest asks for a holiday life story in only six words. There were several times during the Christmas holiday seasons where I actually had a part time job playing Santa Claus. I had to go to Santa Claus school where I got my costume, and learned what to say and do. I remember the costume being uncomfortable and hot. Kids liked to pull on the fake whiskers. Many kids are scared of Santa, but they need to stay relatively calm till the picture is taken. Moms were great at whispering in my ear some of the things that Santa might bring this year. This would often soften the kids up so the visit to Santa was more pleasant. Of course, Santa has to be versed on the North Pole, Mrs. Claus, all the reindeer, especially Rudolf. Overall, I had fun playing Santa..and the job payed pretty well. Making kids happy and feeling a part of the holiday season was a worthwhile experience.
Putting a glass of milk and some cookies out for Santa on Christmas Eve is a tradition in many households with small kids. Thanks for reading...;0) |
