Blank Verse Contest

Poetry Contest
Blank Verse Poetry Contest.

This contest is created for the poets who have taken the blank verse poetry classes; however, the contest is open to anyone. Blank Verse is a poetic form created in the late 15th Century and popularized by Milton and Shakespeare. Blank verse is well suited to many poetic themes, including but not limited to epic, narrative, commentary, romance, nature, etc.

The contest rules are as follows:
1. Poets may not utilize end-line rhyme, either true or proximate. A word repeated at the end of lines, such as me / me is identical rhyme and is not permitted.

2. Poets may not utilize internal-line rhyme, either true or proximate. Additionally, a word repeated in a line, such as me / me, is considered identical rhyme and is not permitted. In other words, there may be no rhyme within any given line; however, there may be unintended internal line rhyme that might occur from line to line.

3. Poets must use strict iambic pentameter. Iambic pentameter requires 10 syllables. The line must begin with an unstressed syllable and the line must end with a stressed syllable. The unstressed and stressed syllables alternate as follows: da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM (da = unstressed and DUM = stressed). No variation of iambic pentameter is allowed for the purposes of this contest. In other words, feminine verse is not permitted.

4. The poem submitted must be at least twelve (12) lines long. If a poet wishes to submit a suite, or sequence of poems, he/she may do so provided each poem is identified as its own entity. Using Roman Numerals, such as I, II, III, etc. or Part 1, Part 2, etc. is an acceptable way to distinguish between the poems in the suite/sequence. Poems not so identified will considered as one poem and will be judged for contest rules' compliance accordingly.

5. Please post your poem at least two days before contest deadline in order to assure contest monitoring and assistance if there is a compliance issue.

6. In order to vote in this contest, one must read and review all of the entries.

The contest winner will win half of the prize pool which is based on the number of entries. The second and third place winners will each share the remaining prize pool. The prize pool is currently 150.00 member dollars. There are only 2 spots still open. If all open spots are used the prize pool will be 180.00 member dollars. In this contest at least 2 submissions must be made for the vote to begin.

Deadline: Contest is closed. Deadline was Friday, March 27, 2015.
