The Candy Dish by pome lover

I inherited a Steuben Glass candy dish,

It’s heavy and it holds a lot.

It’s full of all kinds of temptations,

And will power’s strength I have not.

It sits in plain view on the table,

I pass by it hundreds of times

I try not to let it distract me,

Those candies of all different kinds:

At times there’s homemade peanut brittle,

Or fudge with milk choc’late or dark,

Meringues light as air, sticky middles,

And pralines, and peppermint bark.

I tell myself that it’s for comp’ny,

I try to forget that it’s there;

But that’s just like acting like there’s nothing wrong

When your granddaughter sports purple hair.

It’s really a test of good judgement

But mine has just run out of juice,

I take one of each … Oh my word, these are good!

Sometimes my bad judgement gets loose.

But I’ll think about that tomorrow

As Scarlette O’Hara would say,

And sleep a sound sleep, because after all,

Tomorrow’s another day.
