Back in those days, you had to watch your back, or you might get stabbed in the head. Even the royals were not exempt. Yes, there is always the desire to win. Today leaders don't have to worry so much about being killed. There are other strategies to get rid of an opponent, as are being tried on Trump today. Great reference to times when men fought for their values. I think I'd word the sentence "In fields of fire was taught." Excellent rhyme and imagery. judi

I just wan tv to remind all the folks weeping for Trump. He would have been tried for all these crimes years ago, but we can?t prosecute sitting presidents. The fact that the cows are coming home now is go for both parties. Democrats see the justice while republicans see the "obvious" politics.

Just saying you don't have to get physical these days to get rid of an enemy. And that's what's going on. Whoever heard of anyone having that many indictments? Trump is no saint, but really! judi

I guess most people outside of the US don't realize that Trump has spent the last forty years in courts. He has been sued by almost everyone he has worked with for non-payment.
No one won against him because he sent "fixers" out to threaten people or simply overspent them and sued them into the ground.

It was tough in those days to be on the losing side. Your choice words have a stabbing impact on this reviewer. So far, this poem is a head of the others I've read today. Please forgive nay tardiness. I keep losing the Internet. Our wife is terrible.

I'd pull the knife out, but I'm safer where it is.

The Old Testament is full of stories about what happened to conquered kings. Just my luck to have been royalty had I been born in those days.
Comment from Brett Matthew West
Back in the day men "with values" fought. Nowadays, who needs values to conflict with everyone around them?
As the last two lines state, that is the typical result of almost all skirmishes around the world today. "the conquered king's skull lies upon a table with his future found."
However, are the subjects of those kingdoms any better off than they were before those "fields of fire" occurred? Most often, not.
By the way, awesome picture.

This poem seems appropriate to me having recently read several of Shakespeare's "Kings" plays--all battles and beheadings. Great image, the words present a picture of glorious battles of the past. Very good!

A nicely composed poem about men with values who but don't those enemies she hopefully were evil enough to deserve death. I'm not sure how anyone could live in this world and proclaim all enemies were gone. At least, a appears this king has been vanquished.

Values, back when we were boys, values meant respect, you fought with no weapons, win or lose we never started a war, never inflicted unnecessary pain or loss, always stood tall and help our enemies to do the same, very well written, a wonderful read****kahpot

Now a knife through the skull will most definite get the job done. From this wound there is no coming back. Once this coup de grass has been delivered, it is curtains for sure. Adios amigo.

A knife in the skull speaks volumes as to the degree of animosity that was there.
Comment from Michael Ludwinder
Your poem is well written. I thought you did a great job in showing the contrast between the memories of wartime struggles and the peace that follows victory. Of course you could read into that last line and see more. Great job.

A horrible commentary on the cruelties of war, and man's inhumanity to his fellow being. Your poem is vivid and graphic, and even the image is very startling.
