Knife in a Skull

by Bill Schott

I still recall the battle, boy,

when men with values fought;

our need to win and know that joy

was in fields of fire taught.

Today my enemies are gone,

crushed into the graveled ground;

the conquered king's skull lies upon

a table with his future found.
